arborescence 06 call for entries

DUE DATE TO REGISTER YOUR FILE: MARCH 15TH, 2006

Arborescence 06 has decided to consider the set of Lighting themes.
At once close to the general direction of the festival, which remains faithful to its first orientations meaning: Art/Nature/Technologies, this set of themes brings us through fields of bigger concerns, making echo to the complexity of our destiny related to technological research, sustainable development...
From an artistic and/or philosophical point of view, the light in its substance constitutes a kind of foundation of creation, an ideal of vision and progression. It’s up to us to perceive it, to play with it in a visible or simply readable way.
From purely technical and electric points of view, lighting conceals with its presence technological and digital processes. Today, an installation known as "digital art" must flee ambient light, to better revealing its own image. Conversely to art known as "traditional" which awakes through it. This obvious dichotomy in presentation forms seems to us interesting to apprehend in a thought related to new ways of presentation and constitution of what we call today a production in digital art.
From a political and citizen point of view, and the artist responsibility if we may, the set of lighting themes reveals stakes and directions of a future which opens to a total and equal egalitarian development.
In this way, artists responding to this project call will have to present installations, performances, or all other type of multimedia productions in fields known as of "digital arts".
The synthesis note enclosed, is to be filled out and returned by email or general mail along with all additional information to the project’s good understanding.
A jury made up of professionals will meet at the end of March 2006 to choose the most relevant projects. An answer will be systematically sent to the participants.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
The Terre Active organization, which organizes Arborescence, cannot allow itself to return nor answer in individual way to each art file received.
• Thank you for joining a stamped envelope to your art file for the answer, if necessary.
• This project call does not relate specifically to creations, because we do not have large means of production.
As of its creation, the Terre Active organization made the bet to manage a festival with an original concept in France and Europe, based on collaboration between the performing arts environment, digital creation and ecological issues. This event presents visual and digital installations related to Art, Nature and Technologies.

WIKImedia

2006 WHITNEY BIENNIAL LINEUP

2006 WHITNEY BIENNIAL LINEUP

The Whitney Museum of American Art has announced details of its 2006 biennial. Titled "Whitney Biennial 2006: Day for Night," Mar. 2-May 28, 2006, the show is organized by Whitney curator Chrissie Iles and Walker Art Center deputy director and chief curator Philippe Vergne. Taking its title from François Truffaut’s 1973 film, the biennial "explores the artifice of American culture. . . the irrational, the religious, the dark, the erotic and the violent" (Iles) and "a space between pre- and post-modernist parameters -- somewhere between day and night, between the history of forms and the forms of history" (Vergne). "In this twilight zone," Vergne intones, a bit more comically than he may have liked, "many things are called into question or obscured."
In their press announcement, the curators go on to discuss some of the "intertwining and overlapping strands" of the show: Uncertain Identities and Unfixed Images; Shock and Awe; Lavish Abandon; An Archeology of the Present; and Screen Life. The exhibition also includes a separate presentation by the Wrong Gallery gang -- Maurizio Cattelan, Massimiliano Gioni and Ali Subotnick, who are also organizing the next Berlin Biennial.
Among the many other eccentricities in the biennial are an anonymous performance by Momus, playing an "unreliable tour guide"; work by Otabenga Jones & Associates, a Houston collaborative named after Ota Benga, an African pygmy supposedly brought to the U.S. in 1906 and exhibited in the Bronx Zoo; a puppet show put on collaboratively by Dan Graham, Tony Oursler, Rodney Graham, Laurent Berger and the Williamsburg "art band" Japanther; and a recreation by Mark di Suvero and Rirkrit Tiravanija of a peace tower di Suvero originally made with the Artists’ Protest Committee in 1966 in Los Angeles.
The exhibition also features an extensive section of "political" art, including multiple broadcasts about the war in Iraq by Deep Dish Television, and the original drawing for Stop Bush by Richard Serra.
Participating artists include Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, Dawolu Jabari Anderson, Kenneth Anger, Dominic Angerame, Anonymous Collection, Christina Battle, James Benning, Bernadette Corporation, Amy Blakemore, Louise Bourque, Mark Bradford, Troy Brauntuch, Anthony Burdin, George Butler, Carter, Carolina Caycedo, the Center for Land Use Interpretation, Paul Chan, Lori Cheatle and Daisy Wright, Ira Cohen, Martha Colburn, Dan Colen, Anne Collier, Tony Conrad, Critical Art Ensemble, Jamal Cyrus, Deep Dish Television, Lucas DeGiulio, Mark di Suvero and Rirkrit Tiravanija, Peter Doig, Trisha Donnelly, Jimmie Durham, Kenya Evans, Urs Fischer, David Gatten, Joe Gibbons, Robert Gober, Deva Graf, Rodney Graham, Hannah Greely, Mark Grotjahn, Jay Heikes, Doug Henry, Pierre Huyghe, Dorothy Iannone, Matthew Day Jackson, Cameron Jamie, Natalie Jeremijenko, Daniel Johnston, Lewis Klahr, Jutta Koether, Andrew Lampert, Lisa Lapinski, Liz Larner, Hanna Liden, Jeanne Liotta, Marie Losier, Florian Maier-Aichen, Monica Majoli, Yuri Masnyj, T. Nominations:

Markus Kison (de) - "Roermond-Ecke-Schönhauser"Webcams record inconceivable amounts of images and data. Markus Kison found four webcams in Denmark, Amsterdam, Berlin and Roermond and uses them for his 3D-installation. Through a special mirror construction the images are projected onto architectural models. The virtual existence of distant places becomes almost real - close enough to touch. http://www.digital.udk-berlin.de/de/people/students/kison.html

Agnes Meyer-Brandis (de) - "Eisberg-Sonde / SGM-Iceberg-Probe"Agnes Meyer-Brandis has made a surprising discovery: there are subterranian icebergs underneath Germany's Ice-Scating Halls! The artist explores this geological surprise with her SGM-Iceberg-Probe and a mobile drill hole. The probe simulates a dive into 120 meter's depth displaying, on an external monitor, a mixture of images from real antarctic holes and virtual ones generated in real time. http://www.researchraft.net/

Yuko Mohri, Soichiro Mihara (jp) - "Vexations - Composition in Progress"Erik Satie's piece "Vexations" is said to be the longest composition, and the origin of minimal music. Yuko Mohri and Soichiro Mihara use Satie's piece to create a room installation as a sound medium. Together with the first "Vexations"-theme, every sound made in the room is also recorded, transformed into data, and played back as piano notes. In the course of the duration of the exhibition, Satie's theme is transformed into a totally new, ever-evolving piece of music. http://cip.io/about/

Platoniq (es) - "Burn Station""Burn Station" is a mobile self-service for searching, listening to and copying music and audio files with no charge. Moreover, it is completely legal, released under an open licence, and non-commercial. The social application of technology and the idea of the internet as commons, are a main concern of platoniq's members, activists of the "copyleft"-movement. http://www.platoniq.net/burnstation/

Andres Ramirez Gaviria (co/at) - "-./"Ramirez' six minute video uses Morse Code to visualize and sonify a section of the index from the book “Point and Line to Plane”, written by Wassily Kandinsky in 1926. The project interpolates abstract aesthetic elements (e.g. line, plane, form) with the informational space constructed in the Morse Code translation. For Ramirez Gaviria, this is a way to invert the commonly known method of narration in audio-visual media. http://www.andresramirezgaviria.com/

Ubermorgen.com feat. Alessandro Ludovico vs. Paolo Cirio (at/it) -"GWEI - Google will eat itself" Ubermorgen declared war on Google: They generate money by serving Google text advertisements on their websites, technically deconstructing the new global advertisement mechanism by rendering it into a surreal click-based economic model. In order to take over and gain control of Google in due time, Ubermorgen use Google's pay checks to buy the company's shares, whose value currently sums up to more than all Swiss Banks together...
