Linkoln & Olson

Blogs, like the Blues, have been credited with channeling "the voice of the people," but do blogs adhere to any one set of characteristics that defines them as a genre? And how might blogs be understood as public spaces, in light of the time-based performances that take place there?

Selecting the postings that comprise the greatest "hits" of some of their favorite blogs, Abe Linkoln & Marisa Olson "sing the blogs" in order to address these questions. While Linkoln's posts speak to musical genres at large, Olson's posts seek to find harmony with specific models. Both question the status of the author's voice...

The whole "album" is presented as a form of reblog, in an effort to self-reflexively dive into the meme culture that is its subject. The artists' blog gets situated as the site of a happening, and their intention is to come back and continue depositing performative ephemera.

Linkoln & Olson frequently work in the blog format. Previous examples of their collaborative work include Universal Acid and Blog Art, and separate projects My Boyfriend Came Back from the War (Abe Linkoln's 2004 Blog Mix), Screenfull.net (Linkoln & Jimpunk), and Marisa's American Idol Audition Training Blog.

> What is your background ?

I started of in graphic design since 14 , ive had several jobs working in web design and new media for the last 15 years.

> When do you create ?

I hope this answer is ok, i create most times of the day. the best work seemd to arrive in the early hours of the morning. I have also created in several outside installations, namely the tall ships festival in Liverpool in 1997-02-03-04-05

> who inspires your work ?

I can be inspired from most things in life the 'Event series' inspiration comes from 'people' and the events which surround them in everyday life.

> What is art ?

I guess whoever percieves something as Art, very subjective subject i hope the answer is ok? > Have you ever exposed in Italy ? I have been exposed to Italy from art sites and magazies only. The response from visitors to the portfolio seem very good and feedback in generally from Italy, Spain, China, Japan, India, Holland and south america.

> tell me more about your work-

The majority of the work comes from the Metaphysical and Physical
aspects of life and all that it encompases...see the NOW

What others have said:

" Electronic media merge in this solo exhibition of works by new-media artist Mark Sedgwick. An artist, and designer, Mark engages electronic devices-computers, video games, Mobile devices, Interactive TV and Other Mediums in the presentation of his Ikonik Artworks. The resulting works expand the limitations of language and the traditional context of art, proposing a bold new role for the artist in our culture." Michael Williamson..MOWA [ Museum of Web Art ]

" The story of how an artist received a vision that insipired him to
dedicate his life to bringing into existence, a new kind of venue (nowikonik.com). Where edutainment is created and shared, where interactive theater can help heal hearts, and open minds by tapping into and unleashing a creative force on planet Earth through Outer Dimensional art, video clips, games, music & the NOW. > >
What is your background - where you from ?

Swiss-Austrian-North American-Eastern European-Background

> >
When do you create ?

During Business hours.

> >
who inspires your work ?

Corporate Switzerland, Viennese Actionists and the Dot Com Boom gave us the tools (corporate identity manuals, die Aktion, business plans) to work on a piece of radical corporate software (etoy). My main technique is sampling / collage. Influenced by New York rap music from the 1980s, i learned to agressively copy & paste and to invisibly mix conceptual elements with visuals and philosophy with
code. The myth of the pop-star and the construction of a fascist global uber-corporation was the driving force behind etoy. This fusion of drugs and technology was blended with results of our
analysis of Andy Warhol, Archigram, Futurism, Michael Milken and contemporary boygroups such as The Backstreet Boys.

UBERMORGEN.COM`s work is unique not because of what we do but because how, when and where we do it. The Computer and The Network create our art and combine every aspect of it. UBERMORGEN.COM is metaphysically influenced by Lawrence Weiner and practically enhanced by ever
reinventing Madonna, Jean Tinguely, the Nouveaux Réalistes and by the hardcore Viennese Actionists. The unseizable chronoclogical and squashed spacial circuit of conceptual art, drawing, software art,
painting, sculpture and „Digital Actionism“ (Media Hacking) transformed our brand into one of the uncatchable identities - controversial and iconoclast - of the contemporary European techno- fineart avantgarde.

Artists of relevance:

On Kawara, Joseph Beuys, Mario Merz, Mark Rothko, Richard Serra, Peter Weibel, Andy Warhol, Gunther Brus, Rudolf Schwarzkogler, Jean Tinguely, Lawrence Weiner, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Marcel Duchamp, La Monte Young, Archigram

> >
What is art ?

Things that artists do, but... then the problem is, who is an artist and who not. Artists are people producing things and exhibiting them and have texts written about their work and getting paid for the
things and getting funding for their work. Also, frequently works of artists can be found in art collections and museums.

> >
Have you ever exhibited in Italy ?

Yes,
Fabio Paris Art Gallery, Brescia, Share Festival Turin, Artissima Turin, Arte Fiera Bologna...

> >
How do you image your work in a city_space ?

Not at all, i see it in museum space and in galleries and in homes of art collectors.

> >
tell me more about your work-

it deals with a Psych|OS.
In October 1994 three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found..." "The Blairwitch Project"

In March 2002, ubermorgens Hans Bernhard experienced a manic outbreak in South Africa. He was airlifted to Austria - General Hospital Vienna. Two and a half years later, UBERMORGEN found video footage of his stay at the Mental hospital. They decide to release the material unedited.

"We are the children of the 1980s, We are the first internet-pop-generation.
We grew up with radical Michael Milken [The King of Junk Bonds] and mythical Michael Jackson [The King of Junk Pop].

Hans Bernhard is loaded with 10 years of internet & tech [digital cocaine], underground techno, hardcore drugs and net.art jet set [etoy]. His neuronal networks and brain structures are similar to the global synthetic network he maintained subversive activity within.
And now both Hans Bernhard and The "Network" are infected by this structural disorder.

title : Second Circle of Meditations

year of production : 2005.

used technology : Pure HTML (Microsoft Internet Explorer is required, however, because it supports the tag in HTML)

http://homes.dsi.unimi.it/~aandreja/secondcircle

Classical music has been created in an informationally poor
environment. The people from 17th century and before were not acquainted
with noise. The loudest sounds were thunder and church bell. In such a
world, any new musical information must have been refreshing
and exciting. The 20th century was significantly noisier. The Internet
(and our age of informational pollution as well) in general
is definitely the noisiest environment so far. Consequently, the music
for the Internet and our time should rather open new empty
spaces and create new silences.
The work consists of 99 HTML pages. Each page is connected with the
next and with the previous one. Each page is completely filled
with one randomly chosen color and plays the C-major chord of unlimited
duration. The tone colors from the MIDI palette are chosen
at random for each page. The randomly colored long chords and empty
screens serve to suppress the informational overload. The
observer enters the first page, and in any moment, goes forward or
backward through the composition. In this way, the observer
chooses his/her own tempo of "reading" the piece.

Project Title : IDENTIFY

LINK for actual Applet:
http://users.design.ucla.edu/~rajorshi

Project Category : Interactive Guerilla Net-art

Project Synopsis : "IDENTIFY" is a live interactive "guerilla" net-art
that questions our perception of identity within the context of
contemporary surveillance systems. On the backdrop of today's hostile
custom regulations and surveillance procedures, the mugshot in a
passport, has acquired a whole new connotation, a sterile non-emotive
picture becomes the more accepted interface of a person. This piece
attempts to subvert such relationships.

An image of a passport randomly found on the internet is defaced using
custom software. The piece also points at the nature as well as
authenticity of content found in today's public spaces, e.g. the
internet.

Software used: The piece is programmed in the Processing environment.
