Digital Fringe is a web based digital arts festival that connects to Melbourne via numerous screens throughout the city. From the grand screen at Federation Square to hidden screens in venues and retail outlets, from screens in public spaces, in taxis, on mobile 3G handsets to bedrooms at home and projections on buildings. Surprise, Surprise is an exhibition that appears at first glance to be a typical summer 'blockbuster', the stellar cast of artists promising 'wow' factor, familiarity and accessibility.
But the forty high-profile artists taking part will in fact be displaying pieces that are atypical of the work for which they are best known. By reversing expectations through a presentation of the unexpected, the unfamiliar, the unknown and the one-off, Surprise, Surprise offers both revelation and a challenge to the preconceptions we readily impose on exhibitions of contemporary artists' work, often before we have actually seen them.
Contemporary art is certainly not unique in fuelling and trading on expectations through the advance promotion of well-known names. Large-scale group exhibitions - and most typically the annual round of epic summer shows - tend to play most aggressively to this kind of recognition factor, stimulating interest in the show through the promise of familiarity that more established artists' names bring.
As a strategy, such pre-publicity only highlights an increasing reliance on the artist-as-personality, regardless of the qualities of individual pieces of work. And if what is then exhibited exactly matches our expectations, it might only serve bolster a one-dimensional impression of an artist's work.
Compounding this, artworks are often included in group exhibitions precisely because they are both typical of the artist, and at the same time validate the show's thesis or themes. Perhaps it is inevitable that these tactics - which drive the popular discourse around contemporary art - tend to reinforce preconceptions rather than open up a wider field of discussion, and propose alternative viewpoints.
Surprise, Surprise is a playful but provocative exhibition which, in showing how the apparently familiar can confront us with something less expected, aims to reassert the importance of art's fundamental ability to point out what we do not know, as well as allowing us to recognise what we do.
Surprise, Surprise will be accompanied by a publication, available free to visitors to the exhibition. It will contain a text by the curators of the exhibition, images of the works on display, and information on the participating artists.

You might have already heard of, or even already be a contributor to, the VJ Theory project.
If you haven't then the project falls into two areas:
samples of work from the forthcoming book and the project/community which lives at:

This project intends to develop a community actively discussing and reflecting on philosophy and theory related with Vjing and realtime interaction.
It is apparent, during workshops and discussions at Festivals and symposia, that practitioners of both VJing and Interactive Installations will quickly move on from problems with the practicalities of production to more complex ideas of how and why the process has, for example, significance for the viewer.

Areas we still need material:

Politics (activism, guerrilla, community focused realtime interaction and performance)
Intellectual property
DIY culture
Realtime interaction and performance as developing tools
(pd/GEM/Arduino or MAX/MSP/Jitter as used in performance programming for example)
Body

Marisa Yiu and Eric Schuldenfrei are designers who focus on the intersection of art, architecture, and global politics. In particular
their interest lies in examining the ways in which the built environment and constructs of labor shape social relationships, network
systems, and connections between participatory design and civic engagement. In their current work, art and technology are components
utilized to engage and inform the viewer. The work encourages individuals to be more active in shaping the city, public space, and
the world around us.

Chinatown WORK, 2006 is an interactive public art installation for multiple sites in Chinatown. Silhouettes of pedestrians mix the footage
of interior work spaces with time-lapse exterior street images of unique areas that define New York’s Chinatown contemporary work
culture. The piece focuses on those industries that helped to establish and provide immigrants’ employment in New York in the past and still
today. The interactive and responsive installation encourages community participation in the changing landscape of Chinatown while celebrating
the people who made and still are contributing to this exceptional part of Lower Manhattan. For the light box component of the piece, Marisa
Yiu and Eric Schuldenfrei collaborated with 3-form material solutions and October Ai to construct a sewn map of lower Manhattan and develop a
socially and environmentally conscious material for the optimum keying of the technological needs of this project. The first site installation
is at the HSBC facade on Canal Street (58 Bowery Branch). The artists are also planning for installations at other sites in Chinatown for the
summer of 2006.

The Public Arts installation is made possible by the generous support of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Grant for Art in Public Spaces,
the September 11th Fund, the Manhattan Community Arts Fund supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs, 3-form material solutions and Asian
American Arts Centre. The project is endorsed by the Rebuild Chinatown Initiative (RCI), Explore Chinatown Campaign and assisted by Chinatown
Partnership LDC. First site provided by HSBC at Canal Street facade at the 58 Bowery Branch. Opening reception generously supported by Chivas
Regal and hosted by the Storefront for Art and Architecture.

Ci aspettano infatti tante novità, a partire dal nuovo sito web e soprattutto dall'avvio del progetto che prevede finalmente il pagamento dei video, in linea con quanto sta già avvenendo negli Stati Uniti con Lulu.tv e Eefoof.com. Una mostra d'arte concepita come un palcoscenico per narrare l'esistenza
alla FABBRICA DEL VAPORE - Milano

A cura di Marina Mojana e Giuliana Montrasio, la mostra si colloca come il proseguimento delle mostre “Legami. La Visione continua” e “Sotto la superficie. Nostalgia dell’Origine” presentate in Fabbrica del Vapore nell’autunno 2004 e nell’autunno 2005.

Otto giovani artisti – Fulvio Di Piazza, Sara Giannatempo, Federica Giglio, Claudio Marconi, Andrea Mastrovito, Roberta Savelli, Maria Grazia Serina - differenti tra loro per tecniche espressive e linguaggi, fanno vivere allo spettatore un viaggio nell’arte pensata come rappresentazione della commedia umana, in una miscellanea di danza, musica, teatro, fotografia, pittura e scultura.

“Quello che ci sta a cuore è dare fiducia e visibilità a chi intende l'arte come momento prezioso della vita, come ricerca del destino, esperienza del bello, racconto della felicità di esistere, anche nelle sue forme più tragiche”, affermano le curatrici. “Da qui, l’importanza di un manufatto che sappia dare all’idea una forma, possibilmente, perfetta. Siamo convinte, infatti, che senza forma venga meno il contenuto e che l'arte non sia mera rappresentazione, ma processo di azione-creazione. Globe Theatre Art appunto, in cui gesto, colore, luce, movimento e suono, sono gli strumenti da affinare per realizzare il sogno della sinestesia delle arti o dell’arte totale”.

Pittura, scultura, fotografia, video, installazioni e musica, si fondono in un unico impianto visivo, all’interno del quale lo spettatore si aggira liberamente come in un set scenografico, alla ricerca della sua propria umanità, nel riflesso sublimato di un’esperienza creativa che è promessa di trasformazione. Come accade nella scala “genealogica” di MARIA GRAZIA SERINA, cubi di legno composti a piramide che marcano il passaggio graduale dall’identità biologica famigliare alla nuova identità artistica cui sente di appartenere.

Nella terra di confine fra ciò che appare e ciò che esiste, persona e personaggio, due grandi lembi fissati al soffitto come quinte teatrali calano al centro della sala descrivendo gli spazi di un proscenio e di un fondale. Sulle tele di garza, le giovani donne di ROBERTA SAVELLI esprimono vissuti e stati mentali differenti: assorte nell’artificio della messinscena le prime, più spontanee e rilassate le seconde. Entrambe, comunque, parte di una stessa inesorabile esistenza, primo e secondo tempo di un eterno “Doppio atto”.

Sempre soggetti femminili nelle stampe fotografiche di SARA GIANNATEMPO, corpi di donna raggomitolati in posizione fetale che gradualmente si aprono all’esterno e invocano il contatto. Dal magma primordiale di un mondo senza tempo, un presente nuovo è restituito alla memoria per il tramite dello spettatore-testimone. A lui un accorato appello: “Aiutami ad ardere ancora”.

Di forte impatto emotivo, le due opere di FEDERICA GIGLIO, “Benedetta da Dio” e “Film”, entrambe parte di un progetto più complesso esposto con “Mostramostro” alla Stazione Termini di Roma nel marzo 2006. Il calco dell’artista nasce come immagine iconografica iperrealistica-surreale a descrivere sinteticamente una condizione personale universalmente umana, nonché al femminile, di resistenza, di esistenza, di silenzio per omissione su un tema difficile, cristallizzando un momento grave ed estremo come la depressione Bipolare.

Il “Film”, invece, è narrazione “Performance” che costringe lo spettatore a vivere la costruzione, la costrizione, la catarsi attraverso il mezzo a noi ormai più congeniale del suono, del silenzio, dell’immagine in movimento.

Diversamente surrealista ma ugualmente densa di narrazione, la pittura maniacale di FULVIO DI PIAZZA propone allo spettatore l’inedito “Turbulivo”, olio su tela che lo riconferma vate del particolare, della citazione dotta e mai ridondante, ostinata e mai bizzarra. Portavoce di una sicilianità fantascientifica, Di Piazza controlla le masse di colore e le restituisce nella forma di un surrealismo compassato, venato di lucida veridicità. Più che un tuffo nella dimensione onirica, l’artista siracusano propone un connubio con l’assurdo, con quel tanto d’illogica consequenzialità che permea la cultura di oggigiorno.

In un gioco di rimandi e contaminazioni, il lavoro di ANDREA MASTROVITO, “Anyway the wind blows”, trae invece le mosse da Bohemian Rhapsody dei Queen, primo e insuperabile esempio di rock operistico in cinque atti, capace di fondere suoni, immagini e parole. L'istallazione, realizzata con carta, luci e ombre sincronizzate alle note del brano, dà vita ad un vero e proprio spettacolo teatrale, espressione visuale dei movimenti musicali: dal preludio esplicativo allo svolgimento dell’azione, passando per il coro shakespeariano (col celeberrimo "Oh mamma mia mamma mia let me go”), fino alla chiusa sommessa e disperata.

Pongo bianco su fondo bianco, anche i mezzibusti di CLAUDIO MARCONI vivono di riflessi, ombre nate dall'incontro-scontro fra luce e materia. Bozzetti modellati e poi distrutti, immagini plasmate dall’impronta di una mano e trattenute nell’ingrandimento di una stampa.
Vite autonome, vite anonime, vite ingigantite di “Quadri dirigenti”.
