SEQUENCES

SEQUENCES is an international crossmedia festival in Reykjavik with the focus on time based art phenomena. The festival links contemporary visual art with other media, especially sound and performative art. It will take place in different locations in the city center of Reykjavík, accompanied by exhibitions and video/shortfilm nights. SEQUENCES will invade established spaces (museums and galleries) as well as public spaces in the city center of Iceland’s capital. A fine selection of international and local artists will participate in this unique event. The strong interrelation between visual arts, sound and performance arts is significant for Iceland’s vibrant art scene. These nexuses are accountable for specific dynamic creative processes which develop especially in time-based art projects.

’M A S K I N’

’MASKIN’ is an exhibition of art works that to a variable degree are machine-like in their nature.
The exhibited works use mechanics, electronics and computer science; mechatronics, for production and presentation.
The works are to a great extent autonomous objects. By creating various forms of “artificial” life, the artists question traditional understanding of universal connections.
Some of the sculptures in the exhibition are purely mechanical installations. Kinetic principles are used to convey poetic thoughtfulness. The machine itself becomes a transcendental metaproject. Naked machine, bare thoughts.
While some of the works are communicatively pro active, others are far more subtle in their attempt to catch your attention. The works span from mechanical life forms with artificial intelligence to kinetic hardcore. Some of them openly show their feelings, others are somewhat shy, and one just wants to entertain you!
The exhibiting artists work within a wide range of ideas and designs. The works have in common partly the communicative and mobile methods they use, as well as the serious, investigative approach to visual problems, that all art depends on in order to achieve quality.
The relationship between man and machine includes existential problems with a potential we hardly see the extent of today. ‘MASKIN’ wants to provide some insight into how certain artists are inspired by the challenges generated by this relationship.
Several of the artists have shaped this field for a long time, and TEKS is very proud to have the opportunity to present these artists, all of whom exhibit in Norway for the first time. This year’s exhibition is since 2004 the third Trondheim Matchmaking festival show at the Trøndelag Centre for Contemporary Art.

- KEN RINALDO

http://kenrinaldo.com/
While biological systems have served as mimetic maps from which to study, emulate and create artificial life artworks, biological intelligences have never existed in individuals alone.
In biological systems there is a complex symbiotic coupling between all levels of living beings (micro and macro) as well as a structural coupling with matter, energy and information that exists in an ecosystem.
Consequently, approaches to artificial life art installation, should be expanded to incorporate and consider complex environmental and behavioral entities (humans), which may contribute to emergent properties exhibited in these systems.
Natural living systems are competitive, communicative, and symbiotically intertwined, and yet we have few examples of functioning machine installations designed to exhibit bio-machinic symbiosis.
Ken Rinaldo will review early works as important precedents to later works, which will look at his artworks and scientific investigations, which expand notions of artificial intelligence, biological art, transpecies communication and artificial life.
He proposes that an awareness of ecology and symbiosis in biological systems can point to software and hardware approaches, which look to the environment in which our intelligent machines may arise, emerge and intertwine.
