Will the iPod Kill the Radio Star? - Profiling Podcasting as Radio by Richard Berry University of Sunderland, UK

RADIO

Writing in 1930 Bertolt Brecht argued of radio: The radio would be the finest possible communication apparatus in public life, a vast network of pipes. That is to say, it would be if it knew how to receive as well as to transmit, how to let the listener speak as well as hear, how to bring him into a relationship not isolating him. (Brecht, 1993 )

In seguito alla diffusione dell'IPOD, podshow.com ha per primo iniziato il processo di commercializzazione di podcasting e successivamente anche radiotail.com con servizi di hosting e pubblicita'

In the UK a trial has already been conducted to stream live video to mobile phones via data capacity on a DAB multiplex although, ironically, volunteers used the devices to listen to digital radio rather than the TV channels on offer (Timms, 2006 Timms, D. Agreement Provides Master Framework for Delivering Control Room Programming from UMG Artists Across its Broad Digital Distribution Platform

Relationship Kicks off with Exclusive Broadcast of Snoop Dogg in Concert

LOS ANGELES, November 15, 2006 - Control Room, the #1 provider of live digital entertainment, and Universal Music Group (UMG), the world\'s leading music company, today announced an agreement whereby UMG will provide Control Room with the opportunity to have access to its extensive roster of chart-topping artists. Under this agreement, Control Room will be able to create and distribute live programming for artists signed under UMG\'s affiliate and partner labels without having to negotiate rights individually for each show.
The company also announced the inaugural performance under the agreement. Control Room, in conjunction with MSN, will present Geffen Records\' artist Snoop Dogg in concert, available on MSN beginning November 20. The performance, captured at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, will stream over MSN\'s global network the day before the release of Snoop\'s much anticipated album, "Tha Blue Carpet Treatment." Through this exclusive broadcast, hip-hop fans will be offered a sneak preview of the new album and will be treated to a host of special guest performances.
"We are delighted to partner with Control Room whose service is strengthening the connection between artists and fans," stated Larry Kenswil, President of Universal Music Group\'s eLabs, the company\'s new media and technologies division. "Universal Music is committed to cultivating online entertainment by offering our consumers even more ways to enjoy the musical experience."
"This master agreement with Universal Music Group changes the game," said Aaron Grosky, executive vice president of music programming and production for Control Room. "We can now capture and deliver programming without having to clear the rights individually. The flexibility enabled by this agreement allows us to continue to create meaningful connections between artists and fans, faster and with greater flexibility."
Live performances by UMG artists will be captured and transmitted across Control Room\'s powerful multi-platform distribution network, including MSN, DIRECTV, QUALCOMM MediaFLO and various other partners internationally. With this agreement in place, all UMG artists who choose to work with Control Room will benefit from the marketing and potential audience reach of more than 500 million viewers aggregated within the Company\'s worldwide partnerships in broadband, TV, radio and wireless.

CURRENT TV AND EMI

CURRENT TV AND EMI LAUNCH PARTNERSHIP FOR BROAD USE OF MUSIC CATALOGS

San Francisco, CA (November 13, 2006) - Breaking new ground with a partnership between a cutting edge television network and a music publisher, Current TV has finalized an agreement with EMI Music Publishing, the world's most successful music publisher. The deal will enable Current to access EMI's song catalogs, and fully integrate its artists and their work into the network's programming. The announcement comes on the heels of a unique deal between Current and APM Music, a joint venture of EMI and BMG Music Publishing, to give the network's viewer contributors access to its catalogs to score their own TV segments.
Current TV, the cable and satellite network founded by Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, has become the home of "viewer created content" on television, with one-third of its broadcast supplied by its audience. It seeks to create a more authentic connection with its audience, and EMI seeks to use its unique programming as a means to connect a young audience with the new and establishedartists on its roster.
"Things have changed in the past few decades. Young people aren't looking to the established networks or record labels as a source for what's cool anymore. They're looking for word of mouth recommendations from friends, on the web, underground sources or communities that they respect," stated David Neuman, president of programming for Current TV.
"By using our programming to break out new and established artists from the EMI Music Publishing catalog, we want to further connect with our viewers by becoming a resource that introduces them to new music while also enjoying access to classics."
Roger Faxon, co-CEO of EMI Music Publishing stated: "Current has a unique connection with our audience, who see music as a way to authentically connect with other people in their generation. For this reason, EMI sees the network as a new and relevant way to connect our artists with music listeners."

About EMI Music Publishing
EMI Music Publishing (
www.emimusicpub.com) is the world's most creative music publisher with more than one million copyrights including some of the best-known songs ever written: "New York, New York," "Over the Rainbow" and "Singing in the Rain."

Its current hit-making writers and producers include: Arctic Monkeys, Fergie of Black Eyed Peas, Natasha Bedingfield, James Blunt, Kelly Clarkson, Jermaine Dupri, Eminem, Enya, Nelly Furtado, Gorillaz, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Eros Ramazzotti, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.

About Current TV
Current TV, which launched August 1, 2005, is the first national network created by, for and with an 18-34 year-old audience. The network shows young adults what’s going on in their world, in their voice. Current is also the first network in history whose programming is supplied in part by the very audience who watches it. It has developed the television industry's leading model of "viewer created content" (VC2), which comprises roughly one-third of Current's on-air broadcast, and allows the audience to submit short-form, nonfiction video "pods," "viewer created ads" (V-CAMs), and mobile video. Its award-winning programming ranges from the hottest trends in technology, fashion, music and videogames, to pressing issues such as the environment, relationships, parenting, finance, politics and spirituality.

Current is available in 30 million U.S. homes via Comcast (channel 107 nationwide), Time Warner Cable, and DirecTV (channel 366 nationwide).
