Theresa Duncan & Jeremy Blake

Our Order From Their Chaos

"A child in the dark, gripped with fear, comforts himself by singing under his breath. He walks and halts to his song. Lost, he takes shelter, or orients himself with his little song as best he can. The song is like a rough sketch of a calming and stabilizing, calm and stable, center in the heart of chaos. Perhaps the child skips as he sings, hastens or slows his pace. But the song itself is already a skip: it jumps from chaos to the beginnings of order in chaos and is in danger of breaking apart at any moment..."
--Deleuze and Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus

"Neurosis," Blake says, "is a broken record in your head." The cumulative effect is somewhere between a great expressionist painting and a bad acid trip. su wired.com

Mixtacity

Mixtacity is a newly-commissioned installation by Nigel Coates which explores the area’s potential to accommodate the complex range of cultures, ethnic ties and lifestyle choices of its future inhabitants. Some 160,000 new homes are planned for the area; what will this mean for the architecture of the city? How will the Gateway appear to up to a million anticipated newcomers?

The heart

The heart

This exhibition looks at the evolution of our understanding of what the heart is, what it does and what it means. Concentrating primarily on Western medicine and culture, it brings together objects and images from the histories of both science and art, as well as from everyday life.
It follows the development of our anatomical knowledge of the heart, but also considers its far-reaching cultural and symbolic significance. Why is it that the pump that circulates our blood is so intimately bound up with the way we discuss our emotional and moral lives, and so central to the question of the relationship between body and soul?
You can explore a few key items from the gallery in the
online taster. This online area is organised into the nine areas of the Heart gallery. Click from gallery to gallery or select areas of interest from the drop-down menu provided.
