"In Situ '07 luna

Site Specific-Live Arts!

ARC Biennial 2007

The Arc Biennial is as much about people as it is about the art. Presenting and promoting Australian art in a rapidly changing world fosters creativity and inspiration not only for Australian artists, but also for the Australian public as a whole. The event brings together creative minds and offers a platform for dialogue and cultural exchange.

ARC Biennial: Art Design and Craft

Cube

... Portraiture has historically been a means to immortality for the sitter.
Traditionally, portraits are staged, often single moments bound by the time in which the individual modeled for the artist.

Lincoln Schatz (Website) has created a multi-disciplinary work that combines architecture, sculpture, new media, relational aesthetics, and portraiture.

Cube, a 10 x 10 x 8 foot architectural structure, extends from the artist’s formal background as a sculptor and draws on his more recent practice in generative video memory artworks.

Cube is designed with 24 video cameras mounted at varying heights within the structure— a one hour session in Cube creates a 24 hour visual rendering of the subject, from which a select percentage of files are retained in the artist’s specially designed software to create a dense, many-layered video portrait.

Drawing on the historical tradition of portraiture as biographical, Cube subjects are encouraged to represent their personalities, interests and values in whatever capacity they choose— the artist consults with his subjects to develop their own visual and performative strategies, and any manner of objects can be brought into the cube to further define a sitter’s personal portrait space.

Cube will be exhibited in San Francisco at Catharine Clark Gallery from October 27 through November 24 and will travel to venues in Miami, New York, and La Jolla in the next year.

For the exhibition in San Francisco, Lincoln selected a cross section of personalities who contribute to the cultural fabric of the San Francisco Bay Area. Portraits featured in the exhibition include Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, international art curator Larry Rinder, artist Ken Goldberg and Webby Awards co-founder Tiffany Shlain, performance artist Annie Sprinkle, philanthropist Ann Hatch, ZeroOne founding director Beau Takahara, UCSF Global Health Sciences executive director Dr. Haile Debas, artist Lynn Hershman Leeson and Bay Area art collector Rene di Rosa, among others. Portraits may also be privately commissioned upon request.
