Shifting Shifting

AERNOUT MIK Shifting Shifting
Opening: Friday, December 7, 2007, 8 p.m.

In the exhibition Shifting Shifting, the Kunstverein Hannover will show central works created over the past two years by Aernout Mik for the first time in Germany: Scapegoats, Raw Footage, Training Ground and Vacuum Room.

In conjunction with Park (2002), the galleries of the Kunstverein will be transformed into a labyrinthal succession of rooms in which the projection screens that are flush with the floor not only convincingly link the moving image to the surrounding space but also directly integrate the viewer into the scope of the works.

The Dutch artist who was born in 1962 in Groningen received the Prize of the Kunstverein Hannover in 1993 and had a Villa Minimo stipend. After the success of his pieces Reversal Room, Glutinosity and Middlemen (all 2001) at the latest, he is among the most important video artists of his generation. With Citizens and Subjects he represented the Netherlands at this year’s Venice Biennale.(view on this blog)

In his elaborately constructed films staged with amateur performers Mik examines the relationship of individual and collective behavior at the moment in which the social order falls apart. The new seemingly documentary videos bring political events to mind without, however, referring to a specific crisis situation. The revocation of the principle of action and reaction as well as a linear development make the performers’ acts appear meaningless as well as aimless and eschew usual expectations. The roaming camera eye devotes the same amount of attention to relevant as well as incidental occurrences. The use of a loop transforms the stagings into hopeless and endless circles in which the role allocation between victim and perpetrator ceaselessly alternates. The lack of sound creates a nightmarish calm and makes the events seem incomplete.

In Vacuum Room (2005), a political meeting is disturbed by the arrival of a group of young rebels. The initially unspectacular coming together is transferred into a surreal unsettling occurrence by means of the bizarre repetitions of the tumultuous situation.

In Scapegoats (2006), soldiers guard prisoners in a former stadium and are in turn observed by civilians. There is neither a meaningful interaction between those persons present nor does their body language indicate a reduction or a cooling off of the conflicts. It therefore appears even more drastic when children stick the muzzles of their machine guns into the backs of the adults as a matter of course.

Training Ground (2006) shows a simulated exercise in which policemen train the tactics for capturing fugitives. It remains unclear if they are acting within the confines of the law or if they are becoming the real aggressors themselves. The irritation is intensified by the fact that the persons of authority are overcome with fits of crying and remain frozen in autistic poses while the fugitives march about with wooden weapons.

In Raw Footage (2006) Mik used for the first time archive material purchased from news channels taken during the Balkan war in former Yugoslavia and which are now being shown for the first time. The brutality of the war is not only mirrored in spectacular scenes but also in its absurd banality. Because the image of the war in Raw Footage resembles Mik’s staged works and these in turn seem much more authentic than the reality transmitted by the media, the question regarding the relationship between authenticity and fiction as well regarding the plausible distinction criteria is disturbingly posed.

into it
