For his solo exhibition at the South London Gallery, internationally acclaimed Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar presents his powerful installation, Let One Hundred Flowers Bloom.
Taking its title from Mao Tse Tung’s words encouraging the participation of intellectuals in the Chinese revolution of the mid-twentieth century (ultimately leading to their imprisonment or even death), Let One Hundred Flowers Bloom makes more general reference to the contradictions inherent in the limitations of state support of intellectual activity.
A hundred flowers are nourished with adequate light, food and water, but a chilled and windy environment stacks the odds against their survival.
