ETech 2008

ETech 2008: Home — O'Reilly Conferences

"How does technology help you perceive things that you never noticed before? How does it help you be found, or draw attention to issues, objects, ideas, and projects that are important, no matter their size or location?

At the 2008 version of ETech, the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference, we'll take a wide-eyed look at the brand new tech that's tweaking how we are seen as individuals, how we choose to channel and divert our energy and attention, and what influences our perspective on the world around us:

Body Hacking. Genomics Hacking. Brain Hacking. Sex hacking. Food hacking. iPhone hacking.
If you can't open it, you don't own it. Take over the everyday aspects of your life and take your senses to the next level.

DIY Aerial Drones. DIY Talking Things. DIY Spectrum. DIY Apocalypse Survival.
As technology becomes more accessible you'll get to do it all on your own. Self-empowerment starts here.

Emerging Tech of India, Cuba, and Africa. International Political Dissidents.
Different environments incubate new ideas and technologies. What these societies bring out will shake up your cultural assumptions and provide a wider world view.

Visualize Data and Crowds. Ambient Data Streaming.
Dynamic systems require new methods of data capture and interaction. Open a window on the methods experts use to interpret and harness"

Liam Gillick

Witte de With is delighted to present Liam Gillick’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands.

Liam Gillick,Three Perspectives and a short scenario , 2007

Liam Gillick’s exhibition at Witte de With is the starting point of a year-long, mid-career retrospective which is also a collaboration between four international art institutions. It comprises a solo exhibition by Gillick at Kunsthalle Zürich, running parallel to his show here at Witte de With; a “scenario” to be held in June 2008 at Kunstverein München; and a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago in January 2009. Three perspectives and a short scenario will be a continuous investigation into Gillick’s practice and an in-depth study of his work to date, adopting a different form at each “station”.

The first station of the project will take place at Witte de With and will consist of three inter-related levels:

an architectural intervention
a documentary film
the “institutional space”

Publication:
A critical reader, designed by Liam Gillick and documenting the year-long exhibition project, will be published in January 2009, on the occasion of Gillick’s exhibition in Chicago.

The exhibition at Witte de With is curated by Nicolaus Schafhausen, Zoë Gray and Sophie von Olfers.

Free Radicals in Rotterdam

37th IFFR focuses in Free Radicals
www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com:

"The 37th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (23 January to 3 February 2008) is being realised under the leadership of director Rutger Wolfson after the departure of Sandra den Hamer.
He is focusing on Free Radicals : film makers and artists who idiosyncratically and energetically follow their own course. In this context, film maker Robert Breer and artist Cameron Jamie are being honoured with Focus programmes. In addition, the festival is paying special attention to one-off film screenings."

FREE RADICALS is also the title of a short film by the New Zealander Len Lye. In 1958, he set to work on a strip of unexposed film with needles, arrowheads and saw blades. The result is an experimental film that has remained emblematic for a recent generation of film makers.
