On Show: 8 December 2007 to 3 February 2008

For the past eighteen months Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre and MOP Projects have collaborated on the Our Lucky Country project, a series of two exhibitions sparked by the now infamous 'Cronulla riots'.

The first exhibition in December 2006 subtitled (difference) examined and responded to issues of identity, trust, culture and community.

This second exhibition in the series titled (still different) sees the same group of 16 artists commissioned to make new work that articulates an understanding of cultural difference in the community, and in particular the Sutherland Shire.
Throughout 2007 these artists engaged in a residency program at the cottage on the grounds of Hazelhurst, where they had the opportunity to connect with the Sutherland Shire community to produce new work. For some, the experience challenged perceptions polarised by the events of 2005. Others have chosen to reflect on a broader jostling and argument about the state of our multicultural society today.

Participating artists are Ron Adams, Liam Benson, Maria Cruz, Elizabeth Day, Sarah Goffman, Michelle Hanlin, Soda_Jerk, Ruark Lewis, Adam Norton, Anna Peters, Nana Ohnesorge, Nuha Saad, Huseyin Sami, George Tillianakis and Mimi Tong.

As part of (still different) Hazelhurst is launching a 168 page publication with contributions from 17 writers and over 130 colour images together with a supplementary documentary DVD about the project by Lisa Andrew.

Dormice

Dormice

Inaugurazione sabato 5 gennaio 2008

Choi Jeong-Hwa

Choi Jeong-Hwa | REDCAT:

"Choi Jeong Hwa’s work as a visual artist and founder of the Gaseum studio blurs the boundaries between art, graphic design, industrial design, and architecture. His work explores issues of accessibility in art and contemporary culture. Choi’s residency at REDCAT from will culminate in a solo exhibition that will include works by invited artists and craftspeople alongside his own, challenging concepts of individual authorship and original works of art. Playing off the role of South Korea and its neighbors as the origin of the production of disposable consumer goods, Choi’s work interrogates the preciousness of unique objects in a time of mass consumption and reproduction."

What is a VJ?
A VJ is a performance artist who manipulates video imagery, LIVE, on large displays and projections, often at concerts, nightclubs and music festivals. A VJ uses video in much the same way that a DJ mixes records. The techniques and equipment vary but the basic principles remain the same (e.g. selecting, cross fading, scratching, cutting and sampling). Some VJs concentrate on just visuals, mixing and manipulating video or film in tandem with a DJ, others incorporate audio with their visuals to create stunning, multilayered audio visual experiences.

Witness Journal - Numero 7
