Subtle Technologies
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

"Subtle Technologies Festival 2008
Recognized internationally as a unique forum that encourages new insights and collaborations, Subtle Technologies challenges its participants to contemplate how art and science act upon one another and reshape perspectives.

Throughout four days of presentations, we cover a wide variety of subjects. It is the unexpected threads that are woven between the various presentations that make the Festival a unique experience.

The 11th Subtle Technologies Festival investigates light as our theme. Studied as long as recorded history, light continues to inspire and mystify us. Either visible or invisible, a particle or a wave, as nourishment, heat, and energy, molecules to complex organisms respond to and are affected by light. The speed of light defines our physics. It has held great spiritual significance for many cultures."

Sacrificial Heart

Gagosian Gallery in London, is pleased to present a single sculpture by Tim Noble & Sue Webster till 24 february 2008

Sacrificial Heart is a large, rotating sculpture of a bleeding heart studded with hundreds of flashing coloured lights. Here, the archetypal Christian emblem fuses with the classic tattoo of rock n' roll and/biker iconography in a mesmerizing display that pulsates with light.
This sculpture is the first three dimensional free-standing sculpture which rotates.
This work marks the 10th anniversary of the iconic wall-piece, Toxic Schizophrenia (1997).

Duality lies at its core: romance and pain, love and hate, veneration and aversion, fidelity and betrayal, sympathy and disbelief, male and female. Its spectacular nature fuses highbrow art with lowbrow kitsch. The riotous flashing lights recall the nightscapes of Las Vegas and the fairgrounds of Blackpool and other British seaside resorts., transforming the vitrine gallery into a playful yet reflective space.

Tim Noble (b. 1966) was born in Stroud and Sue Webster (b. 1967) in Leicester.
They met while studying at Nottingham Trent University. They have exhibited in numerous group exhibitions internationally and have had solo shows at PS1/MOMA, New York (2003), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2004) and Centro de Arte Contemporanea de Malaga (CAC), Spain (2005). Freud Museum, London (2006) Noble and Webster live and work in London.

THE SPECIAL PLAYER

THE SPECIAL PLAYER

IO SONO TE: THE SPECIAL PLAYER

Anxious Climate: Architecture at the Edge of Environment

Three groundbreaking European architectural firms explore the relationship between nature and the built environment and take us beyond the emerging doctrines of green design in Anxious Climate: Architecture at the Edge of Environment. This exhibition, at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) from Thursday, January 31 through Sunday, March 9, challenges accepted ideas of nature and human interaction to creatively imagine what nature might be and how humans might interact with it. The exhibition includes computer renderings, photographs, 3D prints created by MICA’s print lab, and diagrams to support each firm’s vision. Anxious Climate will be on display in Fox Building’s Meyerhoff Gallery at 1303 Mount Royal Avenue. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, January 31, 5–7 p.m.

(Un)Plug - La Defense, Paris 2001

The relationship between humans and nature is continually evolving. As architects and designers work to create innovative and sustainable designs to address this, their tactics are often limited to the ‘organic’ theories of modernity (attempting to mimic natural forms) or the ‘green’ theories of late-modernity (attempting to replicate natural processes). Both approaches try to achieve equilibrium between the natural and social worlds. The three architecture firms in this exhibition—R&Sie of Paris, Phillipe Rahm of Lausanne and Paris, and Amid [Cero 9] of Madrid—suggest that there is another, as yet undefined, design solution that differs from these earlier approaches.

MOBILE MUSIC WORKSHOP 2008

5TH INTERNATIONAL MOBILE MUSIC WORKSHOP 2008
13-15 May 2008, Vienna, Austria
Call for Submissions: Deadline 10 February 2008

The Mobile Music Workshop 2008 is the 5th in a series of annual international gatherings that explore the creative, critical and commercial potential of mobile music. They are inspired by the ever-changing social, geographic, ecological, emotional context of using mobile technology for creative ends. We are looking for new ideas and ground-breaking projects on sound in mobile contexts. What new forms of interaction with music and audio lie ahead as locative media, ubiquitous networks, and music access merge into new forms of experiences that shape the everyday? Can they change the way we think about our mobile devices and about walking through the city?

- TV5

Freewaves 2008

HollyWould...

"Freewaves' HollyWould... festival will take place in October 2008, in the perceived world capital of media. We are looking for interesting works that represent an alternative to mainstream media or directly relate to 'Hollywood.'

Millions travel annually to fabled Hollywood Boulevard between Vine and Highland, the site of the festival. Instead of a street filled with glamorous boutiques and celebrities, tourists find a gritty neighborhood in transition populated by entertainment seekers, the homeless, runaways, media industry workers, art lovers, and ethnically diverse residents. Notions of Hollywood as Xanadu, perpetuated by our media culture, don't match reality.

Media art works include experimental videos and films (narrative, documentary, art, animation, etc.), cell phone videos, DVDs, websites, simple installations, wifi events and silent video billboards. Works from the festival will also appear on television and video-streamed on the Internet. Competitive selection process will be conducted online by a group of international and local curators with a range of specialties and backgrounds."
