Die künstlerischen Prozesse basierend auf Computertechnologien sind letztendlich eine Arbeit durch Medien und sie suchen dabei neue Querverbindungen zu wissenschaftlichen wie auch künstlerischen Kunstformen.

Gustav Metzger

Gustav Metzger - Talking Art

Gustav Metzger, born 1926, is the renowned artist and political activist who developed the concept of Auto-Destructive Art and co-organised the Destruction in Art Symposium in London in 1966.

Metzger was also involved in the Fluxus movement and famously declared an Art Strike from 1977 to 1980. Concerned with environmental issues in art already in the 1970s, many of his projects are now seen as astonishingly prescient. After a career spanning decades, he is now in greater demand than ever, generating new projects as for Münster Sculpture Projects 2007 or realising earlier ideas, as with Project Stockholm, originally conceived in 1972 for the UN Environmental Conference in Stockholm. Now produced for the Sharjah Biennale (2007), the huge installation consists of 120 cars that discharge their exhaust fumes into a plastic structure.

For Talking Art, Gustav Metzger is interviewed by Andrew Wilson, Curator of Modern and Contemporary British Art at Tate. In collaboration with Art Monthly

From Russia with love

CAC, in conjunction with Virginia Celebrates Russia, is proud to present a solo-exhibition featuring works by renowned illustrator Mikhail Magaril. Magaril is a professional book artist and illustrator with a degree from the Moscow Printing Institute. His books are in important collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the British Museum, the French National Library, Harvard and Yale. He was an apprentice at The Center for Book Arts for seven years and the winner of two Carl Hertzog Awards for Excellence in Book Design.

In CAC's exhibition, Mikhail Magaril: Russian Roulette, the artist displays paintings, prints and sculptural works from his private collection. Born in Leningrad, USSR, Magaril's work explores the twists-and-turns of Russian culture with satirical commentary frequently referencing Vladimir Lenin and Josef Stalin, two chief leaders of Communism. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-color catalogue with essay by Ragan Cole-Cunningham, CAC's Director of Exhibitions and Education, and Austin Jersild, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of History and International Studies at Old Dominion University.
