"With this videofestival we want to establish constructive atmosphere, which consists of three layers: authors, experts and general public. We are referring on identifiable Video as integral, independent art practice and not as work which is part of some other art practices (cinematographic film, installations, performances).
Beside discourse that will appear during the festival (as institution or concentration of people with their own opinion) the objective of this festival is also giving video criticism a higher note ( with offer and selection, discussion), enhancing video quality in our country and being complementary to the other worldwide festivals."

The first issue of Photographies

"The first issue of a new photography journal titled Photographies is now available free online. In their Editorial Statement, they express a desire “to construct a new agenda for theorizing photography as a heterogeneous medium that is changing in an ever more dynamic relation to all aspects of contemporary culture.” They chose the title Photographies plural to convey the multiplicity of the medium “rather than a monolithic photography” singular. The articles in this first issue are excellent, although they do get rather academic and theoretical for some, if that’s not your thing. Give it a look now, as future issues are most likely not going to be free online."

Rethinking Media Art
A discussion on the spectrum of contemporary art Practices and the use of electronic media with Florian Thalhofer, Thomas Munz, Sonia Khurana, Shukla Sawant on February 18, 2008 at 7pm.

"Media art" is an art form which has been ignored by art scholars for decades, and one that even experts of our times find difficult to define. Meanwhile, the "new media" stands side by side on equal terms with established art forms at many art exhibitions and festivals. Rather than limiting media art to electronic and digital media, one could perhaps agree that a fundamental technical prerequisite for media art is electricity required for its production and/or reception.

Contemporary media art covers a wide range of subcategories: experimental film, expanded cinema (including film installations, multiple projections and film performances), video art, closed-circuit installations, video performances, computer art and animations, CD-ROMs, Internet and web art, virtual reality, sound art, multimedia installations and performances, which may or may not be interactive, net radio and net TV, live broadcasting, VJ raves and fon and fax art .

Since today lots of contemporary art practices use electronic media, one could ask if media art should any longer be an art category on its own and/or is the term actually inadequate. maybe its the time to let that term go which was originally related to mostly political art in the 1960s and 1970s, opposing mass media and at the same time using media in a creative way? A term that somehow even became a term of easy appropriation during the boom of media art in the 1980s and 1990s where the form or the electronic medium itself stood sometimes very much in the foreground, while media art today questions more and more the extent to which the medium itself can contribute to the content of contemporary art works?

What to do with New Media Art?

Archives & Museum Informatics: Museums and the Web 2008: Abstract: New Media Art: New Challenges for museums in the 21st century

Anne Marie Zeppetelli, Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Canada
Richard Gagnier, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Canada
Elaine Tolmatch, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Canada
Madeleine Lafaille, Canadian Heritage Information Network, Canada
http://www.docam.ca

New challenges concerning the acquisition, exhibition and preservation of media art in museum collections have recently surfaced. These challenges have given rise to an important study led by the DOCAM Research Alliance (Documentation and Conservation of the Media Arts Heritage). Established in 2004, this initiative is a SSHRC funded research project spearheaded by the Daniel Langlois Foundation and the Canadian Heritage Information Network. This paper presents a number of DOCAM case study findings on new media works by the research teams at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Conclusions drawn from a survey of new media cataloguing practices in some North American, European and Australian institutions are also discussed. Museum cataloguing methods and conservation strategies are identified. Finally, the importance of protecting our new media heritage for the future is emphasized. Participants will benefit from the research findings and will learn how the Web is used to bring together vast quantities of resources on new media, including the DOCAM Web site (http://www.docam.ca) .

Pulp Function

Paper, that humble material that we use daily and take for granted, becomes material for art in "Pulp Function", on exhibit in the Narrows Gallery February 16, 2008 through April 2, 2008.

"Pulp Function", is a survey of contemporary paper art that celebrates new works of art by emerging and established artists from across America.

Functional, and often beautiful, objects have been made from paper for centuries. In recent decades however, paper has taken on a whole new life. No longer just a surface on which to create art, paper has become the art. Paper has been cast into sculptural reliefs, made into bowls, and emerged as a popular material for baskets and wall hangings. "Pulp Function", explores all aspects of paper as a medium for art, including vessels, jewelry, clothing, furniture, books and sculpture.

Themes such as commodity, domesticity and decoration are explored in objects that blur the line between art, craft and design. Works like Sylvia Seventy's cast paper vessels, Mia Hall's tissue and paper towel wedding dress and Long-Bin Chen's Buddha head made from Chinese phone books are exciting objects and important markers in the evolution of paper as art. .

"Pulp Function" was organized by Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, Massachusetts and was curated by Lloyd E. Herman. The exhibition celebrates the life of Caroline R. Graboys. It has been partially underwritten through the generosity of donors to The Graboys Fund and by Fuller Craft Museum members.

"Pulp Function", is supported in part by The Cedar Hill Foundation and the Fall River Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency and in partnership with Arts United/Fall River and BOLD Coalition.

Spartacus Chetwynd
