Milano sotterranea

Milano sotterranea

Freeing urban space, making it come alive

Futuresonic 2008 presents the first comprehensive and creative look at social networking by an art festival, featuring a major conference plus artistic interventions across Manchester connecting this theme to Futuresonic's long-standing interest in social and participatory artworks which re-imagine the city.

Manchester city centre will be overrun with 'unplugged' social networking - featuring newly commissioned artworks and many world firsts from an array of international artists across the city.

Digital culture burns bright with a vision of being not in isolation but in groups, placing the relations between people first. Websites such as FaceBook and MySpace have introduced millions of new people to online social networking, but these sites also centralise web traffic and produce conformity. 40 years after people took to the streets of Paris in 1968 calling for society to be abolished, join us as we go in search of the social today.

All artworks and exhibitions are free.

the Sensor Squid

Students use technology to spark creativity :

"Archie is a soft, 6-foot-long blend of cotton and polyester fabric formed into a rough replica of a squid, with an elongated head and 10 tentacles. Embedded within are small electronic devices that make Archie something special: the Sensor Squid.

He is a tool to achieve what his makers call “tangible interface design,” “interactive tactile collaboration,” and “computer-human interaction,” all designed to enable “creativity interventions.”"

FESTIVAL MONDIAL DE L'ART NAIF

FESTIVAL MONDIAL DE L'ART NAIF

The objective is now clearly identifiable for this 4th Festival (from 22 March till 27 April 2008), as we must assure the perenity of this unique cultural event in France and solidly anchor this Festival as part and parcel of the cultural scene. Our ambition is to make Verneuil one of the capitals of Naive Art in the world. All this is gradually taking form, year after year.
Even if everything is not going as well as we would like, we can however express verbally our dreams, and more importantly, permit all the amateurs and lovers of this such particular art form, to keep on dreaming . Even better, she shopkeepers and businesses are also starting to have faith in the Festival as though we have woken the sleeping beauty which is Verneuil, after 6 years of drowsing. One must say that this year, the programme will be particularly inviting.

Wim Delvoye in Budapest

"Wim Delvoye
February 16 - March 23, 2008"

An event of the LOW Dutch-Flemish Cultural Festival, Budapest 2008
www.lowfesztival.hu

You can love it or hate it: Wim Delvoye, enfant terrible of the contemporary scene, makes art that cannot go unnoticed. These provocative works, which make emphatic use of antagonisms, flout conventions and dogmas. His raw honesty and grotesque humour will make you both laugh and wonder.

It is impossible not to notice a kinship with earlier Belgian art. His works resonate with Ensor's scatological/obscene humour, Magritte's austere absurdism, Broodthaers' interest in the unspoken rules of the world of art. Delvoye's art celebrates paradox, which is based on the Belgian surrealist tradition, the conjoining of two different elements/ideas in the same work. The gas cylinders painted in the style of Delft porcelain; the teak wood concrete mixer with baroque ornamentation; painted glass windows with sex scenes; excavators in the style of gothic cathedrals: they all reference, in their peculiar manner, the history of Flemish art.

His creative methods extend from simple drawing to real tattoo, from stuffed animals to bronze casts, from installation to live pigs, from lipstick marks to X-ray photos. If his works are often heavy, massive, they are always vibrant with playful ideas and an ironic overtone.
Beside the pigs tattooed with elaborately detailed Harley-Davidson and Walt Disney motifs, his probably best-known work is Cloaca, which he has prepared in eight versions. The large installation is a complex device that models human digestion. It has a mouth, a stomach, a duodenum and a pancreas, containers with enzymes, and a belt conveyor, which produces, when regularly fed, the end result, i.e. excrement.

Born in 1965, Wim Delvoye lives and works in Gent. He earned international recognition with such high-profile exhibitions as the Venice Biennale in 1990 and 1999, and the Documenta 9 in 1992.

Spiral Jetty

Phenomenal Weather

"Coming March 8, 2008, through November 30, 2008, Phenomenal Weather is a family-friendly exhibition that showcases the astounding variety of weather events that take place around the globe and explores the subject through interactive displays, objects and images.

Approximately eight hands-on displays invite visitors to better understand weather phenomena - from the extreme to the everyday - and the science behind them.

* Hurl a hurricane toward North America in the computer activity “Create-a-cane”
* See and hear a real tornado in a mock storm-chasing vehicle
* Learn how weather is a response to heat imbalances created by the energy of the sun
* Watch a lab-created snowflake grow.
* Try to split light into a rainbow of colors using prisms and mirrors
* Learn about cloud patterns and then test your skills in forecasting the weather"

MULTIPLES

JOSEPH BEUYS. MULTIPLES

from 28/02/2008 to 25/05/2008
Centro Julio Gonzalez - Galería 1

“If you have all my multiples, then you have me entirely.” Joseph Beuys

Of all the possible approaches to the work of Joseph Beuys (Krefeld 1921 – Düsseldorf 1986), the most enlightening and meaningful one is offered by his editions of objects, photographs, prints and films – in other words, his multiples. In their combinations they provide a concentration of the social and political thinking and creative activity of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. These groups of objects and documentary items must be considered as veritable “coded messages” which reveal and faithfully exemplify the ideas and work of this charismatic figure, especially his commitment to art capable of criticizing the art scene of his time and influencing and “healing” society.
