STABILE UNRUHE

THE VEIL: Visible & Invisible Spaces

The Veil: Visible and Invisible Spaces is an exhibition of thirty-six works of art, each of which considers The Veil, its many manifestations and interpretations and puts veils and veiling into context.

Visible and Invisible Spaces intends to engage received wisdom about the veil - particularly current clichés and stereotypes about Islamic practices - and to reflect on the great ubiquity, importance and profundity of the veil throughout human history and imagination. Visible and Invisible Spaces asks artists to investigate the veil in its broadest contexts. The exhibition will be divided into three categories to be interpreted widely: The Sacred Veil, The Sensuous Veil , and The Sociopolitical Veil. Visible and Invisible Spaces, however, is not a documentary exhibition.

Visible and Invisible Spaces is a visual companion to Jennifer Heath's edited volume, The Veil: Women Writers on Its History, Lore, and Politics (University of California Press, forthcoming 2008). The exhibition, Visible and Invisible Spaces, invited visual artists - including videographers, filmmakers and new media artists, as well as painters, sculptors, performance and installation artists - from around the world to investigate and re-vision the veil.

The veil is infinitely visual, yet it is also a means of concealment. The veil is itself mystery, even as it is the shroud that guards the mystery. Veiling is found everywhere and begins in Nature - such as eclipses and the periodic shedding of animals' outer bodily layer (feathers, skin, fur or horn) before re-growth. As much as the veil is fabric or a garment, the veil is also a concept. Veils can be illusion, divination, vanity, artifice, architecture, clothing, hair, deception, curtains, magic, alchemy and transformation, dream, euphemism and metaphor, depression, hallucination, masquerade, beauty, eloquent silence, holiness, birth, liberation, imprisonment. Veils are the ethers beyond consciousness, the hidden hundredth name of god, the final passage into death, even the biblical apocalypse - the lifting of god's veil to signal the "end times."

To be veiled is, to some degree, to be unseen, the condition of both great attraction and repulsion. The artists featured in Visible and Invisible Spaces will speak to these myriad aspects of the veil and more.

Visible and Invisible Spaces begins traveling in 2008. Didactics will be provided and each artist offers a statement describing how her work relates to the veil. The exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity for community and co-curricular activities.

Digit@logue

"Hong Kong Art: Open Dialogue" Exhibition Series I
Digit@logue
16 May - 20 Jul 2008
Contemporary Hong Kong Art Gallery, 2/F, Hong Kong Museum of Art

"What would happen if you crossed Wii with Chinese ink painting? We don't really know, but maybe you would.

Media art has always combined the infinite possibilities of imagination with the rationality of technology to construct a whole new creative realm. Media arts have revolutionized our cultural dialogue: a dialogue that is not only one of memory or invention, but one that is participatory and forward moving, therefore the exhibition is called "Digit@logue".

The exhibition has been conceived on the basis of the digital works held by the museum, indepent artists as well as archive from "Videotage" and the Hong Kong Art Centre's digital collection that it has built up over the past 20 years. The exhibition is divided into 2 parts: Cultural Evolution and Cultural Revolution. Each part aims at juxtaposing the cultural and aesthetic discourse of our heritage of moving images within the global context. Apart from budding local artists, we have also invited a star-studded group of Chinese and Taiwanese artists. The works exhibited will generate discussions that will shape our cultural technosphere. Through this exhibition, we hope to foster an understanding that reaches beyond technological determinism and invite you to plunge into our dialogue of possible impossibilities and rational imagination." - Guest Curator : Miss Ellen Pau

Ellen Pau is a well-known media artist and curator. She is extremely active in the field both locally and internationally.

13th Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean

Association Biennale des Jeunes Createurs de l'Europe et de la Mediterranee:

The XIII Edition of the Biennial of young artist from Europe and the Mediterranean will be held in Puglia (south Italy) from 22nd to 31st May 2008.

It will be promoted by the Bjcem and organized by Regione Puglia.

The Biennial arrives in Puglia at its 13th edition, from 1985 on it passed from Barcelona (1985/1987), to Thessaloniki (1986), Bologna (1988), Marseille (1990), Valencia (1992), Lisbon (1994), Turin (1997), Rome (1999), Sarajevo (2001), Athens (2003), Naples (2005).

"The theme for the XIII Edition of The Biennial 2008 is: "Our Creative Diversity: kairos " (Greek word pronounced keeros, meaning fit time, opportunity, a point in time where change is possible).

"Our Creative Diversity: kairos"

"kairos" is a possibility of change in the city, and feel the vigorous urge towards its further evolution. We have witnessed so much damage and dismay, there is a will building towards that "kairos" point in time where change can take place all over the Mediterranean Region and especially in the south and Middle East.

"kairos" time is also approaching for artists of all kinds. Art has its uses as well as beauty that addresses our deepest feelings. Art can be intense and provoke, raise our awareness, and soothe our feelings. Young artists especially have a fresh approach and can urge their audience to face up to new standards, see new ways. Young artists can transcend the limits that tradition and inertia have imposed and face the new possibilities. They can depict and interpret, raise issues, propose a change, add comprehension, express dismay, raise hope. So also it can be used to enhance and encourage evolution of thought at critical times, at a "kairos" time. "

The selected artists in 48 Euro-Mediterranean countries are divided in the following disciplines:
- Visual Arts (Plastic Arts, Photography, Installation, Performance, Video Art, Comic Strip, Cyber Art, Public
Art)
- Applied Arts (Architecture, Visual/ Industrial/ Web design, Fashion, Digital Creations)
- Show (Theatre, Dance, Urban Acts)
- Literature (Writing, Poetry)
- Music (Rock, Pop, Jazz, Folk/ Ethno, Contemporary, Digital, Dj's)
