2008 Altoids Award

2008 Altoids Award

An innovative exploration of American emerging art, the Altoids Award is granted biennially to four artists nominated and selected by a panel comprised entirely of other artists. Winners in 2008 are each given a $25,000 prize as well as the opportunity to collaborate on this exhibition at the New Museum, providing their earliest exposure to a broad, international audience.

The unique selection process recognizes the role artists have in the development and support of one another’s careers. In 2007, ten artists were asked to each nominate up to five emerging artists. The forty-six nominees were reviewed by a jury comprised of Paul McCarthy, Cindy Sherman, and Rirkrit Tiravanija, all well known for their own groundbreaking artwork and commitment to encouraging new talent. They selected Ei Arakawa, Lauren Kelley, Michael Patterson-Carver, and Michael Stickrod as the winners of the first Altoids Award.

Michael Patterson-Carver - Grim Reaper, 2007
Ink and pencil on paper- 15 x 20 in / 38 x 50.8 cm
Collection of Laurent Godin, Paris

These artists are storytellers; they explore human relationships and the ways in which people convene based on identity, collaboration, family ties, and politics. From Ei Arakawa’s energized and unkempt performances to Michael Patterson-Carver’s humanizing protest drawings, and from Lauren Kelley’s socially conscious stop-motion animations to Michael Stickrod’s intimate edits of family footage, the pieces on view capture an openness that calls for engagement. The four artists produce work that is disparate, but when exhibited together it composes a vivid picture of American art today, and a complex, unsettling view of America itself.

This exhibition is organized by Massimiliano Gioni, Director of Special Exhibitions, and Jarrett Gregory, Curatorial Assistant.

Pigozzi and Paparrazi

"Presenting approximately 350 B/W and colour prints by Salomon, Weegee, Galella, Quinn, Angeli, Secchiaroli, Pigozzi and Newton, the exhibition presents the forerunners and central figures of the “classic” period of Paparrazi Photography—and provides a visual commentary about the evolution of this phenomenon. The exhibition offers an overview and critical look at the history of a photographic genre dedicated to fame and sensationalism. A genre that continues to feed the Yellow Press with exclusive reports on the comings and goings of the jet set in order to push the sales of their publications ever higher."

MIND THE GAP

"21.06.2008 – 07.09.2008

CHRISTOPH GIRARDET & MATTHIAS MüLLER, WILLIAM HUNT, NILS NOVA, ADRIAN PACI, MARTINA SAUTER, PHILIP WIEGARD"

‘MIND THE GAP’ is the warning announcement to passengers getting on and off the London underground. It refers to the gap between the train and the platform, but it could mean more than taking care not to stumble. The transition encompasses different places, times and social constellations. Constant change, abrupt transitions and radical upheavals have become everyday events in our speeded-up times. Permanent reorientation constitutes a significant challenge in contemporary life. It can be experienced as an opportunity, but also as a source of existential insecurity. The exhibition takes such transitional situations as its subject and at the same time reflects the current situation of Kunsthaus Glarus which finds itself, with its change of curator, in a phase between continuity and change. Metaphorically, the works reveal confusing scenic, spatial, perspectival and, not least, existential breaks. The photographs, videos, film works, installations and performances prompt moments of bewilderment, staging volatile transitions and assembling them into new, coherent and yet broken images. They seek to play with spatial and temporal dimensions, inside and outside, reality and reflection, habit and uncertainty, nostalgia and progression. Time and again the viewer is stripped of a supposedly certain perspective. Real and mental spaces blur and form reflective spaces between reality and fiction, which encourage viewers to scrutinise their own vantage-points in ambivalent situations.
