"People Are Strange"

"People Are Strange" will be a night of multimedia performance and projections revolving around the release of Marisa Olson's new artist book, Poems I Wrote While Listening to the Doors, 1992-1994 (Before I found the internet). Written by the artist in high school "while burning incense and listening to the Doors," whose lead singer she then perceived as an "under-appreciated poetic genius," they are now a record of an active artist's earliest creative efforts and they
provide evidence of an obsession with music, genre, psychology, and personal narrative that shines through in her more recent artworks. The title and form of the writings refers to a previous obliviousness to the internet, despite the fact that network culture (and particularly blogging or online diarism) have ultimately had a huge impact upon her practice. This evening will continue Olson's ongoing interest in public humiliation and the aesthetics of failure, from which she believes we can learn more, politically and personally, than from success. A handful of distinguished poets will read short excerpts from the book, a few experimental musicians will turn her words into lyrics, and of course Olson will do some singing and reading of her own. All of this will be mediated by live visual projections and recorded music videos created by the artist in an effort to reconcile past and present, word and image. Participating poets and musicians include Thom Donovan, Stephanie Gray, Christian Hawkey, Dorothea Laskey, and members of the bands Professor Murder, Aa, and Taigaa.

'Flickerize' Google Earth

"Michael Naimark is a longtime media artist and researcher. He is expertise in "place representation" and has made interactive "moviemaps" of Aspen from the street, Paris from the sidewalk, San Francisco from the air, Karlsruhe from the rail, Banff from hiking trails, and stereo-panoramic movies in Jerusalem, Dubrovnik, Angkor, and Timbuktu with the cooperation of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. His work is an unusual combination of optimism and activism (for example, it currently ranks #1 on Google searches for both VR webcams and camera zapper).

Naimark was instrumental in the founding of several world-renown research labs and his art projects exhibit internationally. He received the World Technology Award for the Arts in 2002, was the subject of a 20-year retrospective at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 2005, and currently serves on the Visiting Committee for the MIT Media Laboratory.

Professor Naimark took a few minutes to give us a insight into the success of Viewfinder and to discuss his other ideas: Movie Tagger, Propagation Engine, and True Tally. "

UcanTu - YOU CAN TOO

YOU CAN TOO - SL and RL contest $$$$$$

You can create a museum exhibit. You can inspire others. You can make a difference. You can win fame and fortune (well, perhaps a little anyway).

The Tech Museum in San Jose, CA (RL) will award prizes of up to 1 million lindens for the best interactive exhibits designed in Second Life for our upcoming exhibition called "UcanTu."

UcanTu
The UcanTu exhibition showcases 16 award-winning examples of "technology benefiting humanity" (for more details and a complete list of the technologies, see http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu/ ). Each of these technologies benefits health, education, environment, economic development or equality on a global scale.

The Challenge
Your challenge is to develop an interactive exhibit that highlights one or more of these award-winning innovations in a way that explains its importance, makes it relevant to the lives of museum visitors, and makes it understandable how it works. The purpose of your exhibit is to inspire visitors to realize they can make a difference ("You can, too") in their community and the world, either by supporting these particular innovations or by coming up with ideas of their own.

How to Enter
To enter the contest, you must:
- submit your exhibit idea in text as a project at
http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu-projects.
- create a virtual prototype in Parkside workshop inside an exhibit frame.

Once you have your idea and are ready to build, take a copy of the generic frame by the door and rez it in a spot that will not block access. Create a sign that gives the basic info on your exhibit (title, idea, your name) and any help you are looking for. If you have not already described your project on
http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu-projects, please do so. This is a collaborative project and we encourage you to find other partners and build exhibits as teams. You can join the team for an existing project by going to its Web page and clicking on 'join this project'. Please be respectful of others and their exhibits - if you would like to contribute to someone else's exhibit, contact them and join their team before adding to their frame.

Prizes
For exhibits selected to be part of the RL UcanTu exhibition:
L$250,000 per team member, up to a max of L$1M.

Note: Only exhibits that are truly engaging and novel will be considered for adoption. Be sure to discuss your concept with Shakini or Stephe to make sure it is not one we are already considering.

There will be three additional prizes awarded:
- Most Inspiring Exhibit: L$50,000 per exhibit

- Best in Show (Adult): L$50,000 per exhibit
- runner up: L$5,000 per exhibit

- Best in Show (Teen): L$50,000 per exhibit
- runner up: L$5,000 per exhibit

word of the say : Attractor

"An attractor is a set to which a dynamical system evolves after a long enough time. That is, points that get close enough to the attractor remain close even if slightly disturbed.

Geometrically, an attractor can be a point, a curve, a manifold, or even a complicated set with a fractal structure known as a strange attractor. Describing the attractors of chaotic dynamical systems has been one of the achievements of chaos theory.

A trajectory of the dynamical system in the attractor does not have to satisfy any special constraints except for remaining on the attractor. The trajectory may be periodic or chaotic or of any other type."
