Pierre Bismuth and Michel Gondry: The All-Seeing Eye

"Pierre Bismuth and Michel Gondry: The All-Seeing Eye (The Hardcore-Techno Version)

The new Gallery commission at BFI Southbank is a collaboration between visual artist Pierre Bismuth and acclaimed film director Michel Gondry. For the BFI they have created a new version of The All-Seeing Eye, an installation which explores, this time in the visual arts field, the themes at the core of the feature movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by Gondry and based on an original idea by Bismuth, and for which they got the 2005 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, making Bismuth the only contemporary artist to ever have received an Oscar.

Alt_Cph: Platform for Nordic Non-profit Art Spaces

Alt_Cph: Platform for Nordic Non-profit Art Spaces
19.-21. September 2008

Alt_Cph is a platform offering a joint public setting for alternative art spaces. This year Alt_Cph is pleased to present 18 non-profit art spaces and artistic initiatives from the following Nordic
countries: Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
The Factory of Art and Design has previously hosted the alternative art fair Alt_Cph in 2006 and 2007.
However, this year a new concept is launched. The fair setting is replaced by a platform and will for the first time be thematically curated. This year Alt_Cph presents projects engaged with ephemeral art practices such as sound art, performance, activism and net art. In relation to The Factory of Art and Design’s upcoming Nordic residency program FAIR, we have chosen to focus on the vital alternative art scenes in the Nordic countries. In future Alt_Cph will change the thematic focus from year to year.

The Factory of Art and Design is hosting this event as we find it increasingly important to nurture the collective spirit of the independent artistic milieus and to give visibility to these innovative projects. The platform allows artistic environments that co-exist across geographic boundaries to present their projects on common ground.

Alt_Cph is on one hand initiated by the desire to give the participants a chance to enhance knowledge of Nordic colleagues. On the other, the idea is to give the audience the opportunity to stimulate curiosity and gain insight on a variety of projects existing in a sphere dominated by self-organised, non-profit venues. Hopefully, this will provide inspiration, strengthen networks on the art scenes and open the way for new collaborations.

Under Surveillance

"In the current era, the use of surveillance is ever-present. Readily accepted as part of daily life are small camera phones, security cameras, traffic cameras, and other watchful devices. How do we balance the value of surveillance in deterring, identifying, and aiding in the capture of criminals with the inherent risk of losing our privacy?

Under Surveillance brings together artists who investigate the impact of surveillance along with associated technologies. For example, Golan Levin (PA) confronts the audience with his Opto-isolator: responding to the gaze of the viewer, a solitary blinking eye might stare intently or glance shyly away as a reflection on what it means to be watched. Additional artists represented in the exhibition are Trevor Paglen (CA); Mat Rappaport (IL); Yasmine Chatila, Daniel Goodwin (NY); Yevgeniya Kaganovich and Dale Kaminski (WI); and William Betts (TX)."
