Interstitial Zones

Interstitial Zones
Historical Facts, Archaeologies of the Present and Dialectics of Seeing

The media know only the here and now, that which is fleeting and carries no inner memory. They present facts over which we have no power. Interstitial Zones offers a critical space for opposition, with the work of fifteen artists and collectives that have searched inside the folds of post-war history, areas that the mass media never reveal. The politics of invisibility with which the media confront us are further expanded upon here, providing an archaeology of the present, in which the eclipse of the political and states of exception within our Western democracies are central.

Curated by Paul Willemsen with contributions from: François Bucher, Guy Debord, Sebastian Diaz Morales, Christoph Draeger, Claire Fontaine, Joan Fontcuberta, Jean-Luc Godard, Armin Linke, Gianni Motti, Melik Ohanian, Shelly Silver, Julia Meltzer and David Thorne, Aldo Tambellini, Klaus vom Bruch, et alia.

Please be Seated

"Please Be Seated is a video installation by contemporary artist Nicole Cohen that allows you to interact with the Getty Museum's 18th-century French chairs.

The installation blends footage from decorative arts galleries in the Getty Museum and three French museums with live video captured by a surveillance camera. As you sit in reproductions of the original chairs, you become part of the installation, virtually entering historic recreations of 18th-century French spaces. With this installation Cohen compresses time and space to create a metaphorical game of musical chairs."

Present

Einstein believed that there was no absolute simultaneity; he stated that the distinction between past, present and future were illusionary.
Bea McMahon explores such ideas through a visual narrative. In her current exhibition she invokes Dante’s epic poem The Divine Comedy and Nikolai Federov’s Philosophy of the Common Task.

In 2006 Kijima's first solo show in New York was met with both intrigue and enthusiasm. With her processes in the acquisition of media (found fabric) and intensity of both skill and execution Kijima has effectively carved out a unique vocabulary for image making."

Echando flores
