Kate Gilmore
Kate Gilmore is the sole protagonist of her videos, which take the form of a dangerous line-up of hilariously reckless and poignant performances. Recorded either privately in her studio or on-site, never rehearsed and only attempted once, Gilmore assumes the roles of many different female stereotypes and creates makeshift sets that act as the catalyst for a mélange of wacky riffs on daily life. The extreme emotional pathos and grueling physical endurance recall the early video pioneers Vito Acconci and Bruce Nauman and the seminal 1970s performances of Valie Export and Marina Abramovic.

The Media Lab
The MIT Media Laboratory was founded by MIT Professor Nicholas Negroponte and the late Jerome Wiesner (former science advisor to President John F. Kennedy and former President of MIT), who foresaw the coming convergence of computing, publishing, and broadcast, fueled by changes in the communications industry. As this convergence accelerated, it spurred interconnected developments in the unusual range of disciplines that the Laboratory brought together, including cognition, electronic music, graphic design, video, and holography, as well as work in computation and human-machine interfaces.

Auswahl 08 Gast: koorder
"Auswahl 08 Gast: koorder"

Conception
Since the Avant-Garde, we are aware of the fact, that art is surrounded by contextualisation. Since the late 1990s, it became obvious that the curator is no longer someone who simply organises exhibitions and museum displays but is also able to manipulate taste, influence the career of artists and sometimes becomes a bigger star then the artist that he/she is exhibiting. The "super-curator" was born.
Excuse me are you famous? revisits this tendency in contemporary art and adds a playful tone to the discussion about the power play between artist and curator. One the one hand, the project is realised in an artist run space so that here the curator acts in dependency on the activists of the gallery space of Invaliden 1. Here, the positions of artist and curator are blurring demonstrated by the fact that artists are making the selection of the curator. On the other hand, the thematic approach of the exhibition underlines the influential position of the curator that exclusively chooses exhibits that support her fame. The power play between artist and curator reaches its peak level through the participation of some of the Invaliden1 activists.
Excuse me are you famous? is a short term exhibition that focuses on the relationship between artist and curator. All works of the exhibition are produced before 2005 by various international artists. All works are portraits of the exhibition´s curator, Kathrin Becker ( http://www.k-becker.org/ ).
