ANY SIMILARITY TO ACTUAL EVENTS OR CHARACTERS IS PURELY COINCIDENTAL

Films often tell a story through a series of images and attempts to construct a reality. At the end of the film a disclaimer appears to explain that similarities to reality are coincidental, neither intentional nor accidental. Coincidence is the word that etymologically explains these matters. The word comes from the Latin co-incidere, which defines a situation where two entities exist or occur at the same time and in similar or identical forms. Likewise, this is how photography works: the document generated by the camera coincides with a similar situation or object that is held in our minds. The gap between these two almost identical images (one documented and one recalled from a personal archive) generates the ambiguity of the document.

THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD

THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD (dir. Mike Bonanno, Andy Bichlbaum 2009) is a shocking comic adventure that follows a couple of political pranksters as they discover how our economic system is robbing us of the chance to do what's right. Their daring hijinks expose the deceit, lies, and corruption at the root of the world’s worst disasters – industrial, economic, and now, potentially, apocalyptic climate change.

Burning Ice

"Climate change forces us to face the consequences of our actions and overturns our world-view of endless growth and progress. Sombre predictions are no longer dismissed as apocalyptic millennial madness. Our ‘longing for the wilderness’ is put to the test by melting ice caps, acidified primeval forests, felled rain forests and endangered animal species. Our civilisation seems to be founded on waste, excess and fundamental inequality. We find it hard to restrict our boundless need for mobility. What view of mankind should we take as the basis for the change of behaviour that is essential to our survival? What scenarios for the future are left to us?"

GAMERZ

"What is going on when video games turn to be a medium that allowed artists to create?
When artists invest fields such as virtual universes, or network?
When contemporary art meets entertaining and freaking universes?

Back from Istanbul and for the fourth time, the international events GAMERZ spreads over the city of Aix-en-Provence, taking over three locations of contemporary art.
From the very beginning of the year 2009, a real cultural tour emulates the city during a month, inviting the public to discover the new creation through a series of exhibitions, meetings, and performances.

Far from a simple festival, GAMERZ deploys a deep work over artistic creations and new
interventions around creative processes.

Realized in cooperation with Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey, Austria,
England, and in collaboration with Second Nature association, M2F Créations is undertaking a real inter-cultural exchange and proposes an intense rendez-vous with contemporary arts in the region of P.A.C.A."

Fairytale of Berlin

„Fairytale of Berlin“ associates itself with the legend of life within Berlins sub-cultural niches, the place yearned by many migrated creatives. And of course does especially this art scene of Berlin have grave downsides in store for the art producers, having to deal with an increasing surplus of art being only one example. The show wants to reflect this situation where aspiration and reality often collide.

THE SPACE OF THE WORK AND THE PLACE OF THE OBJECT

THE SPACE OF THE WORK AND THE PLACE OF THE OBJECT

January 11 – March 22, 2009

New York - SculptureCenter is pleased to present The Space of the Work and the Place of the Object, a group exhibition that considers the status of the art object within the context of its production, on view January 11 – March 22.
Participating artists include Walead Beshty, Melanie Gilligan, Gabriel Kuri, Michael Rakowitz, Blake Rayne, Karin Schneider, Simon Starling, and Carey Young. An opening reception will take place on Sunday, January 11, 4 – 6 pm. Performances of Melanie Gilligan’s Prison for Objects will take place during gallery hours January 11 – 19.

The featured artists build on the ideas and critical positions of Process Art and employ methods that range from documentary to literary, but the emphasis is on a direct engagement with the materiality of the object. The artists in this exhibition all make objects that reflect the facts and fissures of their production. Each artwork is concerned with the conditions in which art and meaning are made and circulated, turning them to their own advantage, or sometimes ignoring or
disrupting them. Accident presides alongside necessity as determining factors for this work, which further highlights the central concepts of systems of production, display, and distribution.
