In Search of a New(er) Digital Literature

In Search of a New(er) Digital Literature

curated by Alan Bigelow

Given its ongoing (and often surprising) metamorphoses on the web, it is dangerous to lay claim to a universal identity for digital literature, where exceptions to the rule often signal the coming of new forms, new iterations. But as a result of recent technologies, and digital literature's explosive re-invention of itself on the web, some aesthetic patterns may be emerging on the contemporary scene that offer hope for a form still struggling for its public identity.

War Problems

John Kørner
War Problems

Victoria Miro is pleased to announce the gallery’s second exhibition by Danish artist John Kørner. War Problems is a new series of sixteen large-scale works, each representing a Danish solider killed in Afghanistan and each bearing a single name – Anders, Mikkel, Thomas, Sonny.

Recently on view as part of the 2008 U-Turn Copenhagen Quadriennial, the paintings on exhibition are a significant departure for the artist, who was drawn to the subject matter after reading local news reports: ‘I had lots of questions about what Denmark was doing in the War on Terror in Afghanistan and why a country like ours was involved when we never used to take part in wars.

art KARLSRUHE 2009

At art KARLSRUHE 2009 (5-8 March) the Hamburg artist Friedrich Einhoff will receive the Hans-Platschek Prize for Art and Writing. He has been selected by the respected art historian Werner Hofmann.

The juror will be paying tribute to the artist and presenting him with the award in Foyer Ost at 5 p.m. on 5 March. Initiated by the Hans-Platschek Trust, the prize is being awarded for the second time. Einhoff was born in Magdeburg in 1936. He studied under Alfred Mahlau and Willem Grimm at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg from 1957 to 1962. Human and animal forms are the dominant features of his fascinating paintings, mostly in acrylic paints, charcoal, and sand. The men and women often frozen in place in muted colourfulness before an austere backdrop wear enigmatic facial expressions. The communication with other living creatures also defies any tangible interpretation: familiar yet alien.

Diana Actaeon - Der verbotene Blick auf die Nacktheit

DIANA AND ACTAEON
The forbidden glimpse of the naked body

Around a core of works of art that explicitly relate to the myth of Artemis/Diana and Aktaion/Actaeon as told by Ovid, this exhibition brings together over 300 works in a scope to be shown as such only in Düsseldorf. On its agenda is that view afforded at all periods of art, upon ‘The forbidden glimpse of the naked body’. Diana’s fate is also that of Venus, Susanna, Bathsheba, Nyssia, Phryne, Potiphar’s Wife, Baubo, Sheela-na-Gig and a host of unnamed nudes in modes classical and explicit who pass before the visitor’s eye.

They do so now in works by more than 200 artists, as paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs and videos from German and international private and public collections. Together they provide a unique account of a broad field interesting from both an art-historical and cultural-historical angle – of chastity and desire, of seeing and being seen, voyeurism and exhibitionism.

SHOT VANESSA

CORRADO SASSI SHOT VANESSA

Nameless Science

"Nameless Science
Curated by Henk Slager

December 10, 2008 - January 31, 2009

With projects by Ricardo Basbaum (Brazil), Jan Kaila (Finland), Irene Kopelman (The Netherlands), Matts Leiderstam (Sweden), Ronan McCrea (Ireland), Sarah Pierce (UK/USA), and Morten Torgersrud (Norway)."

The debate on artistic research emerging worldwide in the field of visual art for some five years now tends to focus on what artistic research could be or should be. As a consequence of that debate, artistic research as a yet undefined sanctuary for creative experiment and knowledge production is prone to the danger of being absorbed by an intellectually crippling academic discourse on how the specificity of research-based art as a novel modus operandi could be defined and framed. That tendency is comparable to what happened in the 1990s with the initially so radically formulated anti-disciplinary cultural studies. Such academic debate that ultimately seems to be focused particularly on institutional and managerial results–and is, moreover, connected in Europe time and again with the so-called Bologna rules, i.e. the introduction of a bachelor, master, and PhD structure in art education–provides very little insight in the specific qualities of the artistic research process as such. Therefore, it is more than urgent to approach research practices from the perspective of the artistic profession implying entirely different and also more intrinsic views. ... read all Henk Slager

Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism

"Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism, is a two-day forum on the state of contemporary art criticism co-organized by Artspeak and Fillip. Through a keynote address by Tirdad Zolghadr and two panels made up of international critics Diedrich Diederichsen, Jeff Derksen, Sylvie Fortin, Maria Fusco, Tom Morton and William Wood, the forum seeks to address what is at stake in the shifting value of judgment within contemporary art writing. A renewed interest in the efficacy and function of art criticism has arisen in the last decade, embedded in art market speculation, global conflict and recent economic crises. This forum will engage with the key issues produced from these conversations, specifically returning to the role of valuation in contemporary art writing."

MATTER OF FACT: AFTERMATH

With more than 30 commissioned works, the exhibition in the Akademie-building at Pariser Platz not only highlights many of the pertinent issues relating to security, it also offers fascinating insights into current trends in contemporary art practice, featuring artists from Germany, Great Britain, Japan, South Africa, Italy and Slovenia showing visual art, video art, media art, photography, music, and sound art.

The video artists Korpys & Löffler film a Rhineland-Palatinate-police riot squad workshop, where officers are instructed in the use of the Taser electronic control device. Painter Moritz ® portrays 'Five Peace Monsters', the protagonists of new technologies for political control. Photographer Christina Zück travels to Karachi, where she records the 'psycho-geography' of a site on the 'axis of evil', collaborating with the Pakistani photographer Zahid Hussein on this project. British dubstep pioneer Steve Goodman (aka Kode 9) in collaboration with sound artist Toby Heys illustrate the physical sensations of future sonic weaponry with their installation 'Unsound'. The exhibition will feature works by, amongst others, Peter Kennard, Jörg Möller, Gunter Rambow, Heidi Specker, Akademie-president Klaus Staeck/REMOTEWORDS, Timm Ulrichs, and Omar Vulpinari.

The Danish colonial garden meets Middle Eastern war zone

The Danish artist Soren Dahlgaard, also known as The Dough Warrior, meet Israeli artist Meir Tati, also known as Yellowman, in their joint performance "The Danish colonial garden meets Middle Eastern war zone".

Meir Tati is a Performance- and Videoinstallation artist working with the reality which is his daily life in Tel Aviv. Soren Dahlgaards reality in Denmark is, opposed to Meir Tatis very calm and safe.

It is this difference in realities that Meir Tati og Soren Dahlgaard will use as a starting point. Through their joint work process, performances and discussions they will create artworks and dialogue.

Their cooperation began in Trento in Italy in 2007, where they both participated at the International Prize for Performance at Galleria Civica Museum of Contemporary Art.

The collaboration has also resulted in a show featuring videoinstallatins and explosions on paper at Stalke Up North in Gothersgade 5 - which can be seen until 13 February 2009.

Interrupted Game

Amel Ibrahimovic & Slaven Tolj: Interrupted Game

07.02.2009 - 05.04.2009

Amel Ibrahimovic (b. 1977) defines his exhibition as “a solo exhibition with a guest”. Ibrahimovic's guest is the legendary Croatian artist Slaven Tojl (b. 1964). As the title indicates Ibrahimovic and Tojl are occupied with the crisis that inevitably arises when life, as you know it, is brutally interrupted and you have to define a new identity. In the exhibited works the two artists create small stories, that in different ways deal with a “before” and a “now”. Through drawings, photos and video the viewer is presented with the thoughts and questions that are present, when you are torn between two cultures and you try to clarify your own "broken" identity.
