Nothere

White Cube Mason’s Yard is pleased to present a new exhibition of works by Polish artist Miroslaw Balka. For this exhibition Balka will present two large-scale sculptural works and two video works that deal with recent Polish history, and in particular, with notions of displacement, journeys and memory. The title for the exhibition, Nothere, is purposefully enigmatic and can offer up several possible readings – both ‘no there’ or, equally, ‘not here’ – suggesting a sense of emptiness and isolation.

LA CONNOTAZIONE DEL FERRO

Valerio Anceschi

Tutte rigorosamente in ferro.

Strike a Pose

Strike a Pose

30 January – 28 February 2009

Stephen Friedman Gallery is pleased to present ‘Strike a Pose’ – a group exhibition of emerging and established international artists. A diverse selection of two and three dimensional works, both figurative and abstract, explores the physical, psychological and conceptual implications of the ‘pose’.

The exhibition asks us to consider questions of identity, performance, artifice, appropriation and intent. The formal concerns explored by these artists such as figuration, gesture, abstract assertions and physical interconnections, encourage an awareness of the body in time and space. Classical modes of representation as well as more complex propositions reveal the pose as an ambiguous, self-conscious form.

Bringing together a playful and inquisitive selection of work, the exhibition offers an opportunity to consider the implications of the 'pose' across formal and conceptual territory.

Participating artists include: Colby Bird, Gillian Carnegie, George Condo, R.Crumb, Abraham Cruzvillegas, John Currin, Rineke Dijkstra, Carroll Dunham, Cecilia Edefalk, Elmgreen & Dragset, Isa Genzken, Jan van Imschoot, Dr. Lakra, Sarah Lucas, Mark Manders, Hellen van Meene, Jockum Nordström, Lara Schnitger, Cindy Sherman, Michael Snow, John Stezaker, Thaddeus Strode, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Janaina Tschäpe, Andy Warhol and John Wesley.

Staging Identities, Performing Plurality

Staging Identities, Performing Plurality

Ming Wong's mononoaware

World cinema and its popular development from the late 50s to 70s is the device that Singapore-born artist Ming Wong deploys as a performative strategy to engage communicative disjunctions which occur across cultures.

Mononoaware (Japanese, 'the pathos of things'), a showcase of videos, posters and photographs by Ming Wong, questions approximations of identity and authenticity, 'foreignness' and 'local-ness'.

It's Raining Men!

It's Raining Men!

31 January – 21 February 2009

Jesper Just, Martin Erik Andersen, Alexander Tovborg, Ferdinand Krag, Simon Dybbroe Møller (Maria Loboda), Ulrik Møller, Ulrik Heltoft, Ulrik Weck, Peter Holst Henckel, Kaspar Bonnén and Troels Sandegård

We are celebrating our first exhibition of 2009 with the group exhibition It's Raining Men! The choice of artists is entirely subjective and chauvinist, and is based solely on admiration of the contributing artists' works.

Most of the works in the exhibition are new, and all of the artists, on request, have contributed the works they wanted to exhibit in this context. The result is a coherent presentation that is powerful, humorous and self-referential in relation to the male gender – and the absence of the female gender.

For a long time, there has been a curatorial point in holding exhibitions with women only. It's Raining Men! does not attempt to exclude women from art, but seeks rather to explore the energies that are released when only men are invited.

And it quickly becomes evident that the artists have worked very consciously with the absence of women. Simon Dybbroe Møller, who already utilises a conceptual artistic language, has for example left it to his artist girlfriend Maria Loboda to create a work that consists of a long list of books and films with titles such as: The Man Who Sold the World, The Man Who Fell from the Sky, The Man Who Was Saturday, The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat, The Man Who Could Work Miracles, etc., etc.

Similarly, Troels Sandegård has worked in a consciously gender-specific manner by producing a perfume that smells of men's sweat, which he uses in a provocative and humorous fashion to produce a concentrated amount of testosterone in a perfume bottle.

Martin Erik Andersen has created a new work, the contents of which provide the best possible illustration of the exhibition's title, namely a plinth of mirror glass, on top of which a naked man (the artist himself) dances beneath a home-made umbrella. The work is sensual and very typical of Martin Erik Andersen, in that it is an innovative mixture of materials such as glass, photography, incense, garlands, etc.
