‘Confluence’ – what does it mean? According to the dictionary it is about flow: ‘the place where two or more rivers flow together: the confluence of the Rhine and the Mosel / (fig.) a confluence of ideas’. Now, we are in Gent, Belgium where most historians believe the older name for Gent is derived from the Celtic word 'ganda', which means confluence. But what does it really mean for us now, in this time, in this space? Maybe, we should think of Wittgenstein: ‘Don’t ask for the meaning, ask for the use’.

Theatre. Dance. Art. Video installations. Literature. Music. Technology. It’s hard to label the shows in the biennial Performatik festival. The focus is on work founded on exchange and collaboration between disciplines. The common element is always the live event, the encounter between you and the performer in the here and now. Call it what you like: performance art, live art, body art. It’s a recurring element in 20th-century art and its revival usually signals renewal, or the emergence of an avant-garde. It’s a sign that things are going well in the arts!

To celebrate the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin in 2009 and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his pivotal work “On the Origin of Species,” the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT is pleased to present the first exhibition to examine the consequences of the popularization of his ideas for the visual arts. Comprising approximately 150 paintings, drawings, and lithographs—by artists such as Arnold Böcklin, Frederic Edwin Church, Max Ernst, Martin Johnson Heade, Alfred Kubin, František Kupka, Gabriel von Max, Odilon Redon, and George Frederic Watts—as well as rare documentary material, the exhibition showcases the significance Darwin’s revolutionary theory of evolution had for artists active in the United States, Great Britain, France, and Germany between 1859 and 1959.

Gana Art Presents An Exhibition Curated By Paul Laster And Renée Riccardo
February 12-March 14, 2009
NEW YORK – The Garden at 4 AM, an exhibition curated by Paul Laster and Renée Riccardo, will be on view at Gana Art, 568 W. 25th Street, from February 12 to March 14, 2009. There will be an opening reception on February 12 from 6-8 pm.
The group exhibition features an international mix of 24 contemporary artists and takes Hieronymus Bosch's 16th century masterpiece, The Garden of Earthly Delights, as its point of departure to present a selection of art works that reference the garden, nature, animals and enchantment, reverie, good and evil and the nuance of twilight and impending light. These subjects serve as metaphors for where we are and where we are going in these universally troubled times.
The title of the exhibition also references Alberto Giacometti's enigmatic 20th century sculpture, The Palace at 4 a.m. The combination of the two iconic pieces reflects a conscious twisting of fact – as the Surrealists did and as contemporary artists continue to do – to create poetic, playful and referential works of art. The display of paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and new media pieces in the exhibition echoes the figures and objects interacting in Giacometti's imaginary sculptural plane. Converging in a white space in late winter, the individual works on view construct a previously untold narrative of life, death and renewal.
Artists in the exhibition include Louise Bourgeois, U-Ram Choe, Brody Condon, Angelo Filomeno, Osang Gwon, Claudia Hart, Julie Heffernan, Yong-Ho Ji, Min Kim, John Kleckner, Nalini Malani, Walter Martin & Paloma Muñoz, Ryan McGinness, Marilyn Minter, Paul Morrison, Marc Quinn, Cristina Lei Rodriguez, Tom Sachs, Shi Jinsong, Sally Smart, Jennifer Steinkamp, Michael Velliquette, James Welling and Wu Jian'an.

Il 5 marzo 2009 alle 18:30 inaugura la mostra fotografica Rumore.
L’evento avrà luogo nella Mediateca di Santa Teresa, spazio pubblico milanese tra i più interessanti dal punto di vista storico e architettonico e attualmente riadattato alle nuove dinamiche mediatiche contemporanee.
La mostra è una collettiva che raccoglie le diverse interpretazioni sul concetto di rumore, elaborate da ogni artista in maniera differente, secondo proprie idee e la propria sensibilità.
L’immagine, che parla abitualmente attraverso un codice visivo, esce da questa sua condizione per entrare in una dimensione complessa di percezione uditiva, e conduce il visitatore in un percorso sensoriale che si snoda nelle suggestive e silenziose sale del piano interrato della Mediateca, valorizzando il luogo e stimolando un’esperienza sinestetica del linguaggio fotografico.
Il concetto di rumore è stato definito per la prima volta nell’ambito della teoria dell’informazione; è inteso come un elemento di disturbo che interferisce durante la trasmissione di un messaggio alterandone la sua natura originaria. Si presenta dunque come un elemento legato al caso che introduce incertezza nella comunicazione.
Rumore ha preso vita dalla collaborazione di diciannove giovani fotografi che hanno condiviso la comune esperienza formativa presso la scuola di fotografia C.F.P. Riccardo Bauer. Durante gli anni di studio sono stati ideati diversi progetti fotografici collettivi imparando così a collaborare e a confrontarsi su obiettivi e temi comuni.
Terminata l’esperienza scolastica, il gruppo è rimasto unito continuando a lavorare insieme e a proporre progetti fotografici eclettici nell’approccio estetico e concettuale secondo le inclinazioni personali di ognuno.

Il curatore Sergio Giusti è uno studioso e docente di fotografia. Si interessa particolarmente delle questioni teoriche legate al fotografico e alla fotografia come forma artistica contemporanea. Nello specifico si è occupato di approfondire le questioni teoriche legate al cambiamento tecnologico analogico-digitale e alle sue conseguenze.
Da alcuni anni insegna Linguaggio fotografico al CFP Bauer di Milano e collabora con il servizio educativo del Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea di Cinisello Balsamo.
Collabora da vari anni con la rivista Around Photography.
Con l'associazione culturale Album si occupa di organizzare il Premio europeo di Fotografia Riccardo Pezza riservato a ex studenti di fotografia.
