Italian Genius Now. Back to Rome

"Giunge a Roma a seguito del grande successo ottenuto ad Hanoi, Singapore, Seul, Tokio, Taipei e New Delhi Italian Genius Now, la rassegna promotrice della grande creatività italiana prodotta dal Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci di Prato, curata dal suo Direttore Marco Bazzini e realizzata in collaborazione con il Ministero degli Affari Esteri.

Italian Genius Now. Back to Rome sarà presentata al pubblico italiano dall'11 febbraio al 13 aprile negli spazi espositivi del Macro Future, ed è realizzata in collaborazione con il Comune di Roma. La rassegna espositiva, che nasce per un pubblico mondiale, non segue criteri filologici o storici, ma presenta mezzo secolo di arte e design italiano "per suggestione" andando alla ricerca di un dialogo tra i diversi campi di quella cultura estetica e materiale che resta l'immagine più rappresentativa dell'Italia.

Italian Genius Now intende affermare come nell'arte e nel design il genio creativo italiano, da sempre, vanta quel talento che, in taluni casi ha addirittura modificato i costumi del vivere mondiale, esempio ne è la Vespa GS 150 realizzata nel 1955 da Corradino D'Ascanio e sviluppata per la Piaggio, la stessa azienda che oggi con visionarietà "futurista" presenta lo scooter MP3, del giovane designer Marco Lambri. In quarant'anni di creatività e design ha rivoluzionato la costruzione della scarpa: il genio della moda Salvatore Ferragamo con i suoi brevetti e collaborazioni con artisti del tempo ha realizzato vere e proprie opere d'arte da indossare. Negli anni '50 le ceramiche-architettura di Ettore Sottsass incontrano il genio intuitivo del Maestro ceramista Aldo Londi che per Bitossi produce per la prima volta nella storia quelle sperimentazioni cromatiche e stilistiche che rivoluzionano il sentire stesso di quella materia. Nei primi anni Sessanta l'artista assume un nuovo ruolo professionale: campo d'indagine diviene il linguaggio. L'artista come l'architetto cerca una nuova relazione con la vita. Costante diviene la ricerca della differenza tra linguaggi dell'individuo e quelli della società di massa. A questo passaggio sono legate le esperienze della poesia visiva o concreta di Nanni Balestrini, o le ricerche anticipatamente concettuali di Franco Vaccari ed Emilio Isgrò così come le realizzazioni di nuovo design dei gruppi di Architettura Radicale (Archizoom, Superstudio, UFO). Durante gli anni Settanta, invece, sia l'oggetto mobile che l'opera d'arte si presentano in maniera diversa fino a coinvolgere fortemente lo spettatore come nei quadri specchianti di Michelangelo Pistoletto. A partire dagli anni Ottanta i designer assumono creatività d'artista: traducono anch'essi con spirito esplosivo le nuove pulsioni estetiche da applicarsi all'oggetto di uso comune e quotidiano. L'opera d'arte entra a far parte delle tavole, delle cucine, della casa: si usa e si consuma. Alessi è l'azienda che raccoglie il genio creativo dei maggiori designer del mondo fra cui Stefano Giovannoni le cui creazioni sono caratterizzate da sempre da uno stile infantile e fumettistico.

Il design italiano, la cui sintesi corre fra rigore, estetica e funzionalità incontra, nella rassegna Italian Genius Now, la perfezione, l'accuratezza, l'alta tecnologia delle opere di Vanessa Beecroft, di Sissi e di Isabella Gherardi caratterizzate, invece, da una corporeità "non toccabile" fruibile solo esteticamente.
Per il prodotto italiano il riconoscimento trova facile sintesi nel Made in Italy, una formula di successo planetario che va ricondotta soprattutto alla totale immagine artistica con cui è riconoscibile, soprattutto all'estero, l'Italia. Una matrice originaria che è fatta di un diffuso sapere, dove nei secoli è rimasta intatta la qualità costruttiva, la capacità dialettale che si è fatta linguaggio nazionale attraverso artisti e artieri che hanno tramandato e custodito la virtù dell'opera insieme alla capacità del mestiere. Un'immagine artistica che geneticamente è presente in ogni produzione delle arti maggiori e minori, nei grandi capolavori da ammirare come nei piccoli oggetti d'uso quotidiano, in cui la qualità utile dell'arte si intreccia con l'utilità che piace, nella memoria di un'ampia storia dell'arte che ancora continua a sorprendere per la sua vivacità e a far incontrare storie di un tempo e ricerche di oggi.

Special guest per quest'ultimo appuntamento a Roma è Renzo Arbore, ambasciatore d'eccellenza del genio creativo italiano. Arbore, per la prima volta in una mostra d'arte e design, si presenterà sotto l'inedita veste di ispiratore della collezione di design: Miami Swing: linguaggio Neo Pop contemporaneo ed effetto Tropical Decò.
Arbore musa ispiratrice dei designer Alida Cappellini e Giovanni Licheri per arredi sognati, brillanti e luccicanti della Swing House: la casa dell'ironia e del divertimento, del Life Savers, di Supersimo la poltrona di Simona Ventura a "Quelli che il Calcio", e di molti pezzi che vogliono assolutamente farsi guardare, in mostra e in TV.

Per la sede romana la mostra è stata ampliata anche con alcune opere della Collezione del Centro Pecci tra cui il grande lavoro di Mario Merz, La spirale appare del 1990 e l'importante opera di Enzo Cucchi, Senza titolo (La montagna) del 1989.

A night of multi-channel improvisation

Electro-acoustic musicians Dan Joseph and Miguel Frasconi will improvise within Diapason Gallery's multi-channel sound environment.

Dan Joseph (b. 1966) is a free-lance composer based in New York City. As an artist who embraces the musical multiplicity of our time, Dan works simultaneously in a variety of media and contexts, including instrumental chamber music, free improvisation, and various forms of electronica and sound art. Since the late 1990s, the hammer dulcimer has been the primary vehicle for his music. As a performer he is active with his own chamber ensemble, The Dan Joseph Ensemble, as well as in various improvisational collaborations and as a soloist.

Miguel Frasconi uses glass objects, electronics, keyboards, and "de-evolved" instruments to create music that sounds from a uniquely imagined tradition. He is a founder of the Toronto-based Glass Orchestra as well as the Bay Area sound sculpture band Mobius Operandi, and has performed extensively with the Paul Dresher Ensemble and with trumpeter Jon Hassell. His recent activities include a new score for choreographer Alonzo King, performances with electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick, a newly commissioned work for Gamelan Son of Lion, and concerts with the New York-based composers collective Ne(x)tworks.

Jam: Cultural Congestions in Contemporary Asian Art

As populations surge and international migration grows steadily, the movement of people, objects and identities are activities that have taken on a political and cultural character of their own. Whether the movement is across the city, across the country or across the world we are confronted by the product of such movement, which creates cultural congestions – Jam.

The exhibition explores the concept of cultural congestion in visual art practices in work by emerging Asian artists, including Madi Acharya-Baskerville, Ming Turner, Tsai-Wei Chen, I-Ting Hou, Su-Chen Hsu, Emma Kwan, Feng-Ru Lee, Wang Ruobing, Bindu Mehra & Himanshu Desai, Hua Kuan Sai, Sam Su and Pei-Shih Tu. What happens when there is so much art, so many exhibitions and so many events? Does this overwhelm the viewer and do we develop sensory overload? Or does the congestion enable pausing and reflection of the richness and diversity across cultures? Jam: Cultural Congestions brings together artists from a range of cultures to explore and construct a visual jam, a think tank and space created by cultural congestion.

The Third Woman and The Vienna Underground

Presentation/performance event and screening of the film The Third Woman and The Vienna Underground locative game/performance project.

The project scripts an interactive Mobile Video Game related to U-Bahn spaces, using mobile phone sensing, that presents thematic content by progressively revealing the layers of a contemporary film drama.

The Project is launched from Vienna’s Karlsplatz U-Bahn site, to display and publicise the interactive film-game that we have scripted and produced in Vienna. The scenarios communicate universal issues, adding to a global conversation on migration, the black economy and the underground world of cities.

Using cutting-edge mobile technologies to read QR and Datamatrix codes, we are inviting participants to engage in a game on their personal mobiles with a biologic concept where the user might gather immunity, through participating in scenarios created to reflect on the mythic contagion of MiIASMA.

This is experienced through an interactive film, based on reworking the theme of the THIRD MAN for the 21st century. Audiovisual materials will then be sent to participants’ mobile phones through a number of associated barcode reading technologies, depending on their locations
in the subway...

A Mixed Performance Delivery of a combined Mobile Game, Multiscreen Narrative and Costume Performance, for spaces at the Karlsplatz U-Bahn Passage in Vienna using mobile technologies.

The collaborating team are an international group of professional media artists brought together by the worldwide network provided through the e-MobilArt workshop, and funded by the European Union, Avek: The Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture, Finland, Arts Council of England, De Montfort Univeristy and BMUK.

The Alexia Goethe Gallery is proud to present the first London solo exhibition of artist Sara Haq. The Overland Project is a photographic and filmic installation of works made during a research expedition that was a journey overland from London to Phuket, Thailand, in February and March 2008.

How many of us would love the luxury of slow travel, rather than shooting like a bullet through the air from one country to another? To watch the scenery ebb and flow through villages, towns, cities, peering into the gardens of our international neighbours?
The time constraints of modern life don’t allow most of us to do this, of course. But now we can see a month’s worth of overland travel, from the UK to Thailand, through the eyes of artist and photographer Sara Haq.

Sara’s Overland Project tells the story of her journey through hundreds of towns and cities between the two countries, using trains buses and boats. A large part of the trip was taken on the Trans-Mongolian Express between Moscow and Beijing, revealing startling, and often bleak but stunning, landscapes. The other passengers making the journey also have many a story to tell through Haq’s work.
More than 100 images are on display from Haq’s journey early in 2008, a number are large scale photographs of desolate and unrelenting landscapes . The artist’s presence is subtly reflected in the train windows, marking the stark contrast between the relative warmth and cosiness inside the cabin from the harsh empty planes of the Siberian wilderness. Signs of life and communication are evident in the train tracks, phone lines, satellite dishes, and trucks which unexpectedly infiltrate this remote landscape.
The second part of the exhibition features film and photography. Through a wealth of ever changing contexts, the artist is a stranger amongst strangers. Subjects ranging from chanting illegal immigrants on a deportation route back to China to the crumpled sheets of the cabin cot after a night of meditative insomnia, are captured by the artists inquisitive eye.

This exhibition reaches us in five parts, the four distinct works in the gallery and a publication. Tale is a collection of images and narrative response to the work that gives us the opportunity to evaluate the breadth of work produced since 1992. It cuts through the linear timeline or thematic grouping to expose the alphabet of imagery that Helen Sear uses in her work. Rather than acting simply as an exhibition catalogue, it holds the key to her exhibition at g39, allowing us to pick up on recurring motif, departures in image and style and habitual re-visitations to the same territory.

Stalke Up North is delighted to announce the opening of this solo show with Icelandic artist Kristleifur Björnsson, who in 2008 participated at the Street and Studio exhibition at Tate Modern in London. Kristleifur Björnsson lives and works in Berlin.

For almost ten years, Kristleifur Björnsson took photographs in the mountainous North-East of Iceland. However, the pictures resulting from this long period do not explore the diversity of geological formations, they do not transform nature in a piece of virgin wilderness as one might expect, rather, his focus is concentrated on a certain detail, a particular tectonic situation of the mountains: The images (simply) depict slopes."
