Hijack Reality

"Hijack Reality
Let 100,000 Kunstvereine Bloom!
Bob and Roberta Smith
with contributions from Phyllida Barlow, Ron Haselden, Jennet Thomas
Sat 10 Jan – Mon 9 Mar

Bob and Roberta Smith are widely known for their sign paintings carrying political slogans painted on reclaimed timber, paper or canvas. They appropriate the languages of folk, punk and the alternative protest movements to personalise political sloganeering.

The sentiments expounded are often hard hitting, sometimes stating the obvious, sometimes highly opinionated and mostly very funny.
But Bob and Roberta Smith’s work can’t be reduced to one genre."

Extreme Beauty In Vogue

Almagul Menlibayeva

Priska C. Juschka Fine Art is pleased to present Kurban, Almagul Menlibayeva’s second solo exhibition of video and photography at the gallery. The artist returns to the Steppes of her native Kazakhstan, where she conceives, stages and films mythological narratives, alluring her audience to partake in this visual journey.

Her video Kurban (sacrifice/victim) unfolds like a modern day Iliad. Within the ruins of the abandoned collective farms – once constructed by the deported people of the former Soviet Union, displaced by the government and forced to work in the gulags of Kazakhstan – a seemingly ancient world emerges. Women stand motionless and elongated on ladders, wrapped in shroud-like cloth resembling ancient statues. The architecture, reminiscent of the Greek Parthenon, provides the stage of a surreal world where only these ‘Goddesses of the Steppes’ remain. Expectant men watch from afar as young women in contemporary dress approach carrying a bound black sacrificial ram. As the ram is being dismembered, a child held by one of the mute and detached ‘living columns’ starts crying while the men are wailing. The episode leaps to the portrayal of a young shrouded woman with Shamanistic lamb sculls adorning her temples...

Adult Contemporary

video from the exhibition - Adult Contemporary Cory Arcangel- November 14th – December 20th 2008

"Adult Contemporary seems a particularly appropriate title for this latest exhibition of new work by the now 30 year-old darling of new media art, for Arcangel can be seen here as either having a) finally grown up, or b) having fully sold-out. In actuality, however, both and neither are true as Arcangel continues to explore the possibilities that exist at the intersection of theory, humor, and technological breakdown. Adult Contemporary is made up of six autonomous works — a projection from a VHS tape; a 16mm film; a large fabricated c-print; a self-playing videogame; two computers corresponding; and a suite of monoprints."

As time goes by

AS TIME GOES BY
