Zach Feuer Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Dana Schutz.

For her latest exhibition, Missing Pictures, Schutz depicts halted hobbyists, demonstrative group efforts, therapeutic situations, and fragments of people passing time. These tableaux take place in late-afternoon interiors, constructed stage-like settings and isolated pastoral landscapes that appear to be at the edge of an industrialized world. The paintings depict activities that precede an event, making visible the pictorial moment, frozen and deferred, before an image comes into being and form becomes manifest.

Here, Schutz treats the picture as a material, a malleable situation where the rearrangement of objects is implied. Bodies are props and seem to have come from a previous context. Some paintings on view depict suspended narratives in which the objects and characters appear to have been singed, as if something terrible happened from outside the frame. In one painting 'before' and 'after' collide as a small religious group tries to reassemble a car and driver after an accident. Singers never finish their songs, contracts remain unsigned and writers hover on the cusp of the next letter. Passing time is implied as trains cut through frozen scenes and clouds scroll by an introspective sculpture that has managed to sit on, merge with and block out an otherwise festive couple.

In Schutz's new work, preliminary information, such as schematic stains and thumbnail sketches, remain visible and are incorporated into the finished paintings. Linear marks deface the picture. Features peel off their subjects. Spaces dissolve as washes misalign with patterned fields. As Schutz shows us around the sunny and anxious territory of her most recent fiction, the paintings unmake themselves in front of us.

Dana Schutz was born in 1976 in Livonia, Michigan. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. This is her fourth solo exhibition at Zach Feuer Gallery.

“Invasion of Sound. Music and the Visual Arts” proposes a reading of the esthetic relationship between the visual arts and music as relating to culture, rather to cultures. Such an approach can encompass the whole of music and, at the same time, art in its entirety. To be precise, the exhibition pays particular heed to the points of friction between different musical genres, between different esthetic universes, between different cultures. In other words, “Invasion of sound. Music and the visual arts” aims to reveal how certain musical contexts of particular works disclose a critical distancing with the cultural, social, historic or political norms that the work addresses.

The tenacity of a carefree melody in the memory of those who have experienced exile, the improbable cross-pollination of a Baroque ensemble and a country orchestra, the harmony of a choir in the context of social suffering, the force of rock music or of a brass band interpreted as the history of a people, the melody of a flute as far-away echo of a revolution…. Taking forms ranging from brass-bands to symphonic orchestra, from street music to the score of road movies, from chamber orchestra to free Jazz, the genres are called on and merge in this proverbial voyage where singular works conjugate very different states of consciousness, and in which sonorous confrontations reveal attentions forgotten by and to the family of man

Thomas Feuerstein: INVISIBLE HAND

Gallery Nicola von Senger is extremely pleased to present Thomas Feuerstein’s solo-exhibition, Invisible Hands. Feuerstein, born in 1968 in Innsbruck, examines social systems and biological structures as well as the relationship between science and art in his rather complex works. For his show at Gallery von Senger, the artist has created a multilayered cosmos where one can study these concepts and examine their meaning in both natural and cultural phenomena.

The central work of the exhibition is Manifest (2009) a larger-than-life carved wooden hand which moves in response to the stockmarket fluctuations of large re-insurance companies such as Münchner Rück, SwissRe or Lloyds of London. The hand’s movements, as if magically guided by an unseen force, draw an infinite line on the gallery wall.
A computer server in the form of a container ship Daimonia (2009) breathes life into the hand and records, in real-time, the companies‘ market performance. Simply the name Lloyds imparts an historical depth to the work by making reference to an insurer who had already covered colonial expeditions. Hence, capitalism, as the superordinate economic and social classification system, becomes the focal point.
By using biological metaphors, Feuerstein also conveys his interest in organization and interconnections. In Parlament (2009), single-cell amoeba in a bio-reactor melt into a giant cell of slime mould. This transformation process stands as an allegory of social behaviour and coexistence: do cells transform into one, large state-like structure or rather into many rivaling fractions? This question, though initially unanswered, resolves itself during the course of the exhibition.
The photographic work Species (2008), presents images of a microorganism in the Amazon forming gelatinous colonies. These microorganisms have more in common with our social reality than one, at first glance, might like to think. Of relevance here once again is the relationship of the individual parts to the whole. While the systems examined may vary in size or complexity the questions remain constant: How does structure originate? How much leeway or tolerance remains for the individual within this structure? And are we too simply guided by automatic processes, that is, invisible hands ?
Feuerstein’s art stems from our own social, economic, political, technological, historical and biological reality and reflects the relationship between visual and linguistic elements. However, his aim is not to accurately reproduce structures or to formulate conclusive theories about modern life. The concepts of interdependence, space and transmittance are what interest him. Feuerstein’s artworks stand as receptacles communicating with one another and with a power which just might lead us to enlace the conditions of our time with new possibilities or entrap ourselves in new terms or histories.

X.03 è il terzo movimento di un progetto che si è sviluppato, videocamere in spalla, tra spazi e costruzioni urbane ai margini di diverse città: da Cattolica a Ravenna, a Valence in Francia e a Halle Neustadt, in Germania.

Nel tentativo di realizzare un racconto sulla giovinezza, si entra inevitabilmente in corto con il proprio vissuto, con ricordi e tumulti di un tempo ormai passato. Il contatto con l’incoscienza adolescente provoca un rimescolamento di emozioni che azzera e sminuzza tutte le convinzioni sul teatro accumulate nel tempo: ne risultano capitomboli di pensiero, coriandoli di certezze. I giovani incontrati “sulla strada” non sono bulletti o confezioni vuote, come spesso vengono dipinti, sono sorprese di umanità e gentilezza ed è a loro che è dedicato questo lavoro.

Dal 17 al 23 aprile 2009 Xing presenta a Bologna la nona edizione di F.I.S.Co. Festival Internazionale sullo Spettacolo Contemporaneo dal titolo Tribu.

Il festival ospita non soltanto spettacoli ma esperienze polimorfe e cangianti dalla natura transdisciplinare, spazi fluttuanti in cui confluiscono danza, performance, visioni e osservazione critica. Le creazioni invitate a F.I.S.Co.09 (il cui tema è il tribalismo) a cavallo tra animalità e umanità, branchi e colonie, barbarie e civiltà, evocano il passato ma anche un possibile futuro. Ricalcano esperienze utopiche e comunitarie: dal fantasma collettivo al corpo individuale.

Il programma dell'edizione 2009 (spettacoli, performance, installazioni, happening, progetti speciali) ruota attorno a diverse tipologie di ambienti: un teatro-laboratorio (Sì, ovvero il nuovo Teatro San Leonardo) e una sala teatrale (Teatro delle Celebrazioni), l'anello sotterraneo del palazzetto dello sport (Paladozza), una storica osteria nel centro della città (Osteria del Sole), il Chinese Theatre concepito da Patrick Tuttofuoco per la collezione permanente di MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, un'aiuola spartitraffico e il web, con progetti quasi tutti unici.

F.I.S.Co.09 apre con l'evento speciale Wrestling - intuizioni sul mondo in attesa che diventino una costruzione compiuta, happening sulla lotta ideato da BAROKTHEGREAT vs guests (con Andrea Belfi, Sonia Brunelli, Ensi, Valentina Formenti, Leila Gharib, Michele Pedrazzi, Kiave, Michiel Klein, Eleonora Sedioli, Voin De Voin) dopo il passaggio di testimone di questo particolare formato inclusivo, sperimentato prima da Kinkaleri con Wanted per F.I.S.Co.07, e poi da MK con Wasted per F.I.S.Co.08. Performer, musicisti e master of cerimonies irrompono nel piano interrato di un impianto sportivo per interpretare differentemente il tempo, ognuno con il proprio ritmo prima di muoversi per l’attacco. Wrestling alterna, in una durata instabile e contraddittoria, presenze abituali, figure spettacolari, immaginari di finzione. Lo accompagna in parallelo l'installazione di una terza insegna W a Bologna a cura di Kinkaleri proseguendo la costruzione di un'immaginaria linea metropolitana dell'inversione.
Altro progetto dal formato insolito è la performance per capitoli XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX - a situation for dancing delle danzatrici e performer canadesi Antonija Livingstone & Heather Kravas, 'conversazione coreografica e meditazioni agitate' della durata di tre giorni con ospiti eterogenei (la danzatrice americana Elizabeth Ward, il compositore Bo Wiget, un quartetto d'archi, la performer Margareth Kammerer e altre figure di attraversamento): un insediamento a flussi ricombinabili dove il pubblico è invitato a seguire le variazioni delle diverse serate.
Segue la performance della svedese Eva Meyer-Keller Good Hands, scherzi da bar per una piccola comunità; il mondo-scena preistorico e l'universo inquietante ed esilarante di Histoire par celui qui la raconte, nuova creazione della coreografa francese Latifa Laâbissi con gli interventi scenici di Nadia Lauro, presentata in prima nazionale da F.I.S.Co. nell'ambito di La Francia Si Muove 2009 dopo il debutto al Festival d'Automne; lo spettacolo di *MelkProd./Marco Berrettini *Melk Prod. goes to New Orleans, viaggio improbabile di turisti fuori luogo; e il film dell'artista svizzero Olaf Breuning Home 2, parata anti-standard sui corpi come iscrizioni socio-culturali e geo-politiche.
Il festival sarà accompagnato dagli appostamenti e osservazioni on line di Brainstorming Camera di Decompressione per Spettatori, progetto a cura di Elisa Fontana (www.brainstormingartproject.blogspot.com). F.I.S.Co. pubblica inoltre un quaderno di interventi di artisti, critici, osservatori e teorici sui temi del festival.

F.I.S.Co. è un progetto a cadenza annuale avviato nel 2001 per dare continuità e sviluppo al percorso aperto in Italia sulle nuove forme di spettacolo e sull'innovazione dei linguaggi scenici attuata da una nuova generazione di artisti. Ospita le realtà più rappresentative di quella zona di convergenza esistente fra le arti contemporanee: danza, arti visive, teatro, performance, dando spazio ad esperienze di punta della ricerca internazionale più avanzata. Presenta ogni anno un programma trasversale in vari luoghi della città. Cambia titolo ad ogni edizione per sottolineare una sua mobilità alla ricerca delle questioni più innovative e urgenti negli scenari internazionali.

Ad oggi sono state realizzate otto edizioni del Festival Internazionale sullo Spettacolo Contemporaneo: CORPO SOTTILE (2001), NON IO (arte in mancanza di soggetto) (2002), DOING (2003), YOUR PRIVATE SKY (2004), DEFICIT! (2005), FIGURA N° (2006), TODAY IS OK (2007), UNIVERSAL COSMIC MURMUR (2008), accompagnate dalla pubblicazione del libro CORPO SOTTILE (Ubulibri) e dei quaderni del festival.

Xing è un network nazionale che progetta, organizza e sostiene eventi, produzioni e pubblicazioni contraddistinti da uno sguardo interdisciplinare intorno ai temi della cultura contemporanea, con una particolare attenzione alle tendenze generazionali legate ai nuovi linguaggi. ß

Lunedì 6 aprile Triennale Design Museum presenta il volume di Gillo Dorfles Arte e Comunicazione, edito da Electa.
Intervengono Gillo Dorfles, Aldo Colonetti e Ugo Volli.

Questo volume inaugura una nuova collana che Triennale Design Museum e Electa dedicano all’approfondimento e alla riflessione teorica sui temi del design e della visual culture contemporanea.

Arte e Comunicazione è un inedito di Gillo Dorfles: è la pubblicazione della “dispensa” preparata per i suoi studenti di estetica all’Università Statale di Milano, nell’anno accademico 1969-1970, sul rapporto tra la semantica e le arti.
Si tratta di un testo di grandissima importanza storica, che, fra i primi in Italia, anticipa in gran parte gli sviluppi che si sono succeduti nelle teorie semiotiche durante gli ultimi quarant’anni.
Questa scelta editoriale è coerente con l’idea che il Triennale Design Museum non sia solo il luogo della conservazione e della memoria, ma anche uno spazio di ricerca e sperimentazione.

Gillo Dorfles, con la sua capacità di cogliere le tendenze e la sua straordinaria informazione sugli sviluppi culturali europei e internazionali, presenta le ricerche in corso in quegli anni. Raccoglie e discute le proposte di Barthes, di Jakobson, di Morin, di Metz, di Hjelmslev, di McLuhan e di Lévi Strauss; considera le riscoperte di Morris, De Saussure, Sapir e di Trubeckoy. Stabilisce dei confronti con i risultati precedenti del suo lavoro e con alcune tradizioni filosofiche e scientifiche rilevanti, applicando inoltre queste teorie ad ambiti come il cinema, la fotografia e l’architettura.


Biografia

Gillo Dorfles è laureato in Medicina e in Psichiatria, filosofo, pianista, pittore (è stato tra i fondatori del MAC (Movimento Arte Concreta) con Monnet, Munari e Soldati, professore di estetica a Milano dal 1960, poi a Cagliari e a Trieste.
È stato visiting professor in molte università americane e sudamericane. Tra le numerose lauree ad honorem è importante ricordare le due più recenti: in Disegno Industriale presso il Politecnico di Milano (2002) e nel 2004 presso l’Università Autonoma di Città del Messico.
La bibliografia di Dorfles è immensa, proprio in virtù dei suoi interessi pluridisciplinari; recentemente, l’Archivio del Moderno, presso l’Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, fondata da Mario Botta, ha classificato fino al 2000 più di 2500 pubblicazioni, di cui 150 libri usciti in Italia e all’estero. I suoi libri sono tradotti in una decina di lingue.
Dal 1970 collabora in modo stabile con il Corriere della Sera.
