”S/M/L/XL/XXL”

Jens Axel Beck will exhibit his work

”S/M/L/XL/XXL”

In this installation Jens Axel Beck uses elements from his latest work, oriented on and by the window frame that defines the shape of the Demo Room. The installation seeks to establish scenery of an institutional character, whereby a number of well known objects in everyday life are so manipulated that they achieve the potential of communication.

The title of the exhibition refers to the standard way of sizing clothes. Everyone is familiar with the system, which we all have to squeeze into. The exhibition can be seen as a reflection on classification and systematization, invariable elements of our contemporary existence. In this work there is a focus on how we navigate and establish ourselves as individuals in relation to society’s structures. There is a reflection on individuality as something we can and should acquire; a contrasting perspectives focusses on the cost of individuality as a personal project, which can sometimes miss out on the comprehensive view and on wider structures.

From childhood on we are measured, weighed and tested in different ways and by heterogeneous institutions. Are you below or above the average? At the top or at the bottom of the pile? In so many of the different aspects of life we are forced to relate to systems and to standardized measures and units. Apparently we’re individualists who make our own choices; but how many options are there to choose between? To what degree do we have the ability, or the possibility, of influencing our movements? How far do we want to go – and how far can we go in the realisation of personal and individual needs?

Jens Axel Beck was educated at the Art Academy of Fyn and the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. He is one of the founders of the exhibition space “Koh-i-noor” in Copenhagen.
