"This year in Milan, Droog introduces ‘House of furniture parts’ by Studio Makkink & Bey, a development of the studio’s Stairhouse in Droog’s newly opened New York store. “It is a system that starts from the designer but grows into the culture where it is locally produced, and therefore, it makes me very curious how it will look in five years,” says Jurgen Bey.
Droog will also present new work by FormaFantasma (Andrea Trimarchi & Simone Farresin), Chris Kabel, Studio Nacho Carbonell, Luc d’Hanis & Sofie Lachaert, NL Architects (Michael Schoner), Nadia Pedreschi and NEXT Architects."

Quindici librerie disegnate da artisti come future Crossing-Zones e destinate a luoghi pubblici della città di Milano e provincia.
Il progetto Crossing-Public/Art-Zone nasce con la finalità di sensibilizzare il maggior numero di persone al fenomeno del BookCrossing. La passione privata per la lettura e il desiderio di condividere con altri notizie e saperi sono le componenti essenziali che contraddistinguono il BookCrossing: una modalità alternativa di prestito di libri, una staffetta speciale tra anonimi “corridori” che, attraverso un inconsapevole “passaggio di testimone”, consente alle opere di viaggiare liberamente di mano in mano, di casa in casa e di luogo in luogo. Un moto senza limiti e confini di testi, frasi, parole ma anche di una, seppur minima, traccia di vissuto di tutti coloro che un libro lo hanno raccolto, toccato, sfogliato, fatto proprio per un tempo fuggevole e, quindi, rimesso nuovamente in circolazione. Il BookCrossing innesca, dunque, dinamiche di autogestione culturale e il rispetto reciproco tra quelli che ne fruiscono condividendo una pratica gratuita, pubblica e democratica di scambio indipendente di conoscenze.

5.5 Designers - Centre culturel francais de Milan
Per evidenziare cinque anni e mezzo di creatività dello studio 5.5 designers, Claire Renard, Vincent Baranger, Anthony Lebossé e Jean-Sébastien Blanc festeggiano il loro compleanno durante il Salone del Mobile di Milano 09 (dal 22 al 27 aprile). Una data e un luogo importanti considerato che lo studio si chiama 5.5 designers e dal momento in cui questo appuntamento annuale ha segnato le tappe del loro ingresso nel mondo del design.
Il compleanno, ricco di novità, sarà celebrato con due eventi al Centre culturel français e due nuove collaborazioni presentate in anteprima:
- la mostra “Joyeux Anniversaire 5.5” al Centre culturel français
- l’operazione “Save a product for 1€” al Centre culturel français
- una dispensa per champagne per Veuve Clicquot presso Superstudio Più (zona Tortona)
- la collezione COINCASADESIGN 2009 punto vendita Coin e showroom (zona Tortona)

In questa mostra/compleanno saranno presentati gli oggetti più emblematici del loro lavoro. Non si tratta di una retrospettiva bensì di un’esposizione appetitosa concepita come una grande torta di compleanno: un delizioso matrimonio di pezzi unici, installazioni inedite, prototipi in cerca di editore, oggetti prodotti in serie limitata o in serie per importanti marchi francesi, autoproduzioni o semplicemente esperimenti. I 5.5 designers esplorano svariati ambiti e sperimentano tanto l’oggetto quanto il modo in cui viene prodotto e commercializzato. Essi ci invitano a condividere un momento di piacere con questo concentrato di effervescenza creativa che esprime la loro volontà di rimettersi costantemente in discussione e a scoprire in antemprima, ciliegine sulla torta, nuove creazioni.
Gli oggetti sono stati estrapolati dai vari ambienti per i quali sono nati (l’ospedale per Réanim, l’appartamento ordinario per la collezione degli oggetti quotidiani, la manifattura per “Ouvriers designers”, o ancora il laboratorio medico di clonazione per il progetto “Cloning”); mescolandosi tra loro, mettono in luce i punti di convergenza dei diversi approcci operati dai 5.5 designers. Accostamenti, accumuli o raccolte ci aiutano a comprendere meglio l’universo concettuale nel quale si iscrive il metodo utilizzato dallo studio parigino: un approccio non stilistico bensì carico di interrogativi in merito al ruolo del designer posto di fronte alle problematiche a cui deve far fronte la società di oggi. L’installazione dimostra che le creazioni dei 5.5 designers, al di là del sorriso che possono suscitare o del carattere provocatorio o addirittura politico a cui possono far pensare, occupano lo spazio con eleganza e forza, rispondendo al contempo ai nuovi comportamenti a cui aspirano i consumatori del domani.

a cura di Beppe Finessi, la prima mostra monografica dedicata a Paolo Ulian, uno dei più significativi designer dei nostri giorni, erede dei maestri della grande stagione del design italiano (come Bruno Munari, Achille Castiglioni, Angelo Mangiarotti, Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari), a sua volta già riferimento, per coerenza estro e capacità, della nuova generazione di progettisti.

Zanotta, a leading company in the history of Italian design, and Fabrica, the international research laboratory, continue their co-operation dating from 2008 with Trans-forma, an exhibition of 17 classic Zanotta designs which Fabrica’s young designers have reinterpreted with a modern twist.
The updated icon pieces include:
Sciangai (De Pas, D’Urbino and Lomazzi, 1973), the coat stand that brings to mind the Chinese game of spillikins, is now provided with a number of practical tools. Sella (Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni, 1957), a chair whose seat is a bicycle saddle set on a steel shaft, is now equipped for our modern times, with a chunky anti-theft chain. Blow (De Pas, D’Urbino and Lomazzi, 1967), the inflatable chair that is a symbol of the years of youth protest acquires a playful function. Milo (1937), the mirror evocative of the graceful forms of the famous Greek statue Venus de Milo invites us to reflect on today’s idea of beauty. The Bieder table (Emaf Progetti, 2005) is occupied by two-dimensional figures – people, objects and animals – that show what can happen under the legs of a table. Lastly, the fine embroidery on the rear backrest of the popular folding chair Small (For Use, 2003) turns it into a work of art.

With this exhibition REGINA continues to introduce young talented Russian and foreign artists to Moscow public.
Ryan Mosley was born in Chesterfield in 1980, his father is an engineer. Ryan attributes his enthusiasm for painting to watching his father doing drawings of LP covers at the weekends. By the age of 13 or 14 he knew he wanted to be an artist.
Unlike many young artists, content to manipulate technology, Mosley is a hands-on painter from first to last. Trained at Chesterfield College of Art and Design, Huddersfield University, Ryan Mosley finished his post-graduate studies at London’s Royal College of Art in 2007. His paintings, usually oils on linen which helps to give depth and density to the work are quirky narratives, ever-restless examples of story-telling of a kind that relates back to various recognizable traditions, from Brueghel and the Flemings, to Dutch still-life and genre paintings of the 17th century.
The 15 new paintings that make up the exhibition, while varied in terms of size and subject matter, can be seen as a single, coherent body of work. They operate as a visual ensemble, leading the viewer from the safety and comfort of the gallery into a strange world of carnivalesque characters. The painted faces, costumes and masks challenge us to make sense of what it is we are looking at. Our imaginations are put to work to sort through the rich lexicon of colours, signs and symbols, to make associations and find common sense.
The exhibition’s title A GATHERING is seemingly easy to interpret but in fact has a good deal more in it. Who are these people in a gathering, whose faces can be hardly discerned beneath the washed surfaces of paint applied and erased repeatedly? Looking more closely at the works the viewer gets even more puzzled – characters emerging from the canvases appear to be a reverend and a hobo, some Dickensian figure, a saint and a well-mannered aunt Sally, a nobleman and a gambler’s relative. Unpredictability as a principal argument shocks and delights. All of a sudden one gets an idea that this is not just a group of people in one place but a gathering of character types, which represents a notion of society in its diversity – be it a hobo or a nobleman – everyone has the right to exist, despite race, class ranking and welfare. A variety of “masks”, atmosphere of carnival and grotesque create an impression as if the canvas under attack were a theatre set in the making. There is humour, grotesquery and a perpetual ambiguity of mood. The stories the artist seems to be telling are open-ended, but what becomes really evident is a good sense of humour and the inherent good and positive which invites everyone to become A GATHERING member.
