The Swimming Cities

"The Swimming Cities of Serenissima is a fleet of handmade boats and a crew of artists traveling the Adriatic Sea from Slovenia to Venice this May and June, 2009. We made art boats from junk and will be performing the dreamy story of a drifting metropolis during the Venice Biennale, a celebrated contemporary art exhibition."

The Overlooked Space: Misaki Kawai

The Overlooked Space: Misaki Kawai
May 16 to July 4, 2009
Curated by Paul Butler

New York-based Japanese artist Misaki Kawai strives to make work true to the innocent, honest integrity of adolescent playfulness, but on a more grand and sophisticated level. Her sculptures have ranged from unconventional aircraft to secret icy mountain space stations, variously populated by such characters as a post-Beatles Ringo alongside R2D2 and C3PO, or several versions of Kawai herself.

Misaki Kawai graduated from the Kyoto College of Art (Kyoto, Japan) in 1999, and traveled to Turkey, Nepal, and Thailand, where she was greatly influenced by handmade dolls, textiles, and low quality manufactured objects. She currently lives and works in New York.

The Overlooked Space is a display vitrine in the front entrance of Plug In ICA that has been overlooked throughout Plug In’s 12 year occupancy of 286 McDermot. In an effort to participate in discourses surrounding alternative exhibition spaces and models, Plug In has invited guest curator Paul Butler to program this diminutive space.

Brazil Contemporary

"Brazil Contemporary
Contemporary art, architecture and visual culture
30 May to 23 August 2009

Three Rotterdam museums are bringing the rich culture of Brazil to the city on the Maas. Brazil Contemporary – Contemporary art, architecture and visual culture presents every facet of Brazilian culture in three exhibitions, a publication, and a programme of activities. Brazil is inspiring, astounding, amazing. It is one of the largest countries in the world, with vast cities of millions of inhabitants that defy the imagination. Brazil is an exciting cocktail of high and low art, of street art and politically committed art, and of different art disciplines and traditional craftsmanship."
