An evening of beautiful experiments in music from humans and computers as part of the knowledge futures conference. Enjoy microfolk, brainjazz, robotic theramin cabaret and livecoding.

Leafcutter John's experimental approach to music, including handmade synthesis algorithms, contact microphones and handmade interfaces like his "electric breasts" beloved him to a crowd more used to industrial techno through his chaotic Planet Mu releases. More recently though his love of folk music has shown in his recorded work, his 2006 album finding his guitar and his voice between electronic forests. It's not clear what he's going to do for Transfer, but it'll be chosen from one of the broadest sonic pallets in London.

Finn Peters (sax / flute / fx), Matthew Yee-king (SuperCollider), Oren Marshall (tuba / fx) and Tom Skinner (drums / synths / fx) will play prototypical versions of tracks from the forthcoming 'Music of the Mind' album which features music generated, modulated and inspired by the activity of the brain. As usual, you can also expect some noisy, wild card improvisations.

Slub are three live coders who have made software to make music to drink beer to for the last nine years. Slub sound emerges from slub software; melodic and chordal studies, generative experiments and beat processes. Process-based sonic improvisations; live generative music using hand crafted and live coded apps, scripts, l-systems, daisy chains and traffic simulations in networked synchrony. With roots in UK electronica and tech culture, slub build their own software environments for creating music in realtime. Only custom composition and DSP software is used. Everything you hear is formed by human minds.

Daan Roosegaarde

Artist Daan Roosegaarde, whose work explores the relationship between architecture, people and e-culture, is the next speaker of the University of Kentucky College of Design Lecture Series (pdf). In Between the Inside-Out is an expanded show from In Between the Outside-In that premiered at New Langton Arts, San Francisco, earlier this year. White's exhibition, In Between the Inside-Out, follows her encounters with the ecology and cultures of the Sierra foothills during her residency at the For-Site Foundation in 2008. White's installation proposes new paradigms for art and landscape—from digital imaging to earthenware ceramics—that challenge the presumption of singularity in much site-specific art as encapsulated in Richard Serra's famous dictum "to remove the work is to destroy the work."

The Approach is pleased to present Matthew Brannon’s debut solo show in London. Nevertheless consists of a large sculpture representing a theatre set in a roped-off section of the gallery, a small sculpture of a bookshelf and book, and four of his signature letterpress prints. The show departs from his recent New York trilogy of exhibitions concerning urban malaise by entertaining both the idea and the image of a transatlantic sea voyage. The outdated–once preferred–way to travel to London, now but a literary backdrop or an obnoxious tourist getaway. The irresolvable tension between text and image in Brannon’s prints is here rendered in a sculptural context where form fails to function and meaning humorously flirts with its metaphorical link.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO seeks to challenge an artist to work in an unfamiliar way: using any source other than his/her own work, s/he develops an idea, a concept, a subject or a vision which can only be realized on paper. On 64 blank pages, s/he creates a special project by collecting images, texts, graphs, and/or by inviting artists, friends, family-members to generate content and to contribute to it. Our interest in artists developing this project is based on the conviction that they constitute a main creative source inventing forms for content.
With THE WORLD ACCORDING TO we offer an empty space in which the artist can step back from his/her daily practice to find different ways of examining the world that surrounds them and to finally develop new content and unexpected forms.

Iñaki Bonillas (Mexico City, 1981. Lives and works in Mexico DF).

With a regard for the aesthetics and the conceptual practices of the 1960s and 1970s, Iñaki Bonillas’ work is an investigation of photography, the photographic medium and the possibilities of the construction of the image. In 2003 Bonillas introduced the vast photo archives of his grandfather into his work. He links elements together that are a priori incompatible: on the one hand a personal, biographical narrative that consists of private anecdotes and emotions, and on the other a quasi-scientific element of compilation, classifying and archiving. Bonillas´ work has been exhibited in institutions such as the Venice Biennale (2003), the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion (Barcelona, 2005), Matadero (Madrid, 2007), and most recently at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel (2009).

For the first issue of THE WORLD ACCORDING TO he opens his private library for us. Excerpts range from Parménides to William Blake, Fernando Pessoa, Karl Kraus, Roberto Bolaño, and Georg Christoph Lichtenberg.

Viva l'Italia

Astuni Public Studio is a project by Galleria Enrico Astuni Bologna devoted to research new art communication and exhibiting methods.
Curated by Fabio Cavallucci, Viva l'Italia is the title of the first exh! ibition of the series.

The show will open at 6 p.m. on October 2nd 2009 with artworks from leading galleries and private collections, and in some cases created specially for the occasion. By bringing together the works of artists with different cultural and stylistic backgrounds, it conveys a particular atmosphere: the uncertain, ambivalent mood of today's Italy.

With a series of images and sounds, involving not just space but time as well, Italy is described through its symbolism, its legends and fears, through its signs of decadence, feelings of nostalgia, and precarious elements of innovation.
Everything is pervaded by an air of melancholy, and at times of cynicism. Viva l'Italia is an exhibition full of suggestions that aims to prompt discussion and reflection, rather than offer an unequivocal point of view.

The exhibition includes works by: Rossella Biscotti, Maurizio Cattelan, Nemanja Cvijanovic, Luciano Fabro, Daniel Knorr, L'Epimeteide, Marcello Maloberti, Gian Marco Montesano, Gianni Motti, Cesare Pietroiusti, Leonardo Pivi, Costa Vece, and Sislej Xhafa.

Viva l'Italia will be accompanied by a newspaper-format publication in which the voices of philosophers, politicians, sociologists, artists, and writers will tackle the subject of Italy, its history and future.

La nota famiglia Jeanguenin è lieta di presentare l’Estemporanea Internazionale d'Arte Contemporanea "Voyage dans la couleur" in Costa Azzurra che si svolgerà dal 26 al 27 settembre ’09 nel giardino della storica Villa Magdalena, la Villa degli Artisti situata a Nizza (Francia), in prossimità del Porto e del Palais des Expositions.
L’esposizione valorizza la funzione del colore nell’arte contemporanea e avrà luogo nel giardino policromo di Villa Magdalena, edificata nel 1853 ai piedi del Monte Boron da un aristocratico inglese e successivamente decorata con affreschi e stucchi sontuosi, divenendo sede prestigiosa di eventi mondani.
Il progetto culturale "Voyage dans la couleur" annovera artisti di formazione eteronegenea che si sono distinti per particolari peculiarità stilistiche ed esecutive. Per l’occasione espongono Lorenadia Vidoni, Antonella Modàffari Bartoli, Bianca Battaia, Flora Brescianini, Vania Camilluzzi, Regina Di Attanasio, Giusy Fossati, Gloria Giovanella, Amanda Nebiolo, Francesca Poddesu e Louvio.
