Parliament of Reality

Olafur Eliasson's Parliament of Reality, a new, permanent outdoor installation created specifically for Bard College, will be completed Spring 2009. Conceived specifically with the life of the College in mind, The Parliament of Reality draws attention to our surroundings, both man-made and natural, while challenging the way we perceive and act in the world. The project is inspired by the Althingi, or Icelandic Parliament, the oldest national democratic institution in the world. The work is located on the North end of Bard's campus, near the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.

"Longing in the Age of New Media"

Call for Papers:
“Longing in the Age of New Media”"

In the current age of new media, various fields of study are experiencing a literal vanishing of the very materials that have traditionally defined them. With this disappearance of the physical material, how has our perception and interaction with the new medium altered? Does the end of the age of mechanical reproduction lead to a resurgence of the aura in older media? Is this the result of nostalgia for the tactile or other sensory experiences that no longer act together in the same way? How does the designation of spectral / material change across different media?

The Artist in the Age of Publicity

The Artist in the Age of Publicity
1 October 2009 – 17 January 2010

The Artist in the Age of Publicity will propose a radical re-reading of Pop Art and its legacy. Going beyond ‘Pop’ as a style, the exhibition will foreground the ways in which certain key artists, since the 1980s, have created their own ‘brands’, engaged in self-promotion and co-opted marketing strategies. Among the artists represented will be Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, David Hammons, Martin Kippenberger and Damien Hirst. Where most art-historical accounts have focused on the iconic and stylistic aspects of Pop Art, The Artist in the Age of Publicity will propose that the most radical lessons of the movement have emerged in the way artists in our time have not simply represented or commented upon our culture of mass media but have flagrantly participated in commercialism and infiltrated the publicity machine as a performative strategy.
