Jonas Burgert

Haunch of Venison London is delighted to present the first UK solo exhibition by German painter Jonas Burgert this autumn. Known for his complex and mysterious narrative-style painting, Burgert will present a series of new medium and large-scale paintings.
The grotesque and the mystical provide the subject-matter for the majority of Burgert's art. Bold, sensuous and opulent, the atmosphere in his paintings is of a world of destruction and decay. Working in luminous colours glowing amidst a backdrop of pale hues, the artist depicts an apocalyptic mood of an end time, visions of a netherworld, an unknown myth or a peculiar dream.

Each painting seems like a carefully constructed stage of the opera or the circus, containing an artificial world set up with dramatic lighting, exotic costumes, fantastical make up and stage props, and all of them are oddly populated by humans and animals, shamans and magicians, giants and dwarfs, demons and harlequins, creatures dead and alive.
One imagines Burgert controlling his cast like a puppeteer his marionettes, creating new realities and chaotic, orgiastic universes on the canvas.

Burgert's inspirations are multiple and derive from diverse ideologies and cultures. They come from post cards and literature, images of the Indian Holi Festival of Colours and from the artist’s travels to Egypt, where he visited the remnants of its ancient culture. Another major source of inspiration lies in art history, with many references to strands of Late Renaissance thought visible in the works, particularly the Mannerist’s love of the grotesque and the curious, of harsh and crass colour disparities and of an exaggerated, 'unnatural' maniera.

Incarnational Aesthetics

Incarnational Aesthetics brings together a number of contemporary artists who explore themes of interrogating and deconstructing the boundaries of public and private between self and other through means of embodiment or role play. The pieces in this exhibition turn inward using different means to represent, embody, and empathize with a specific person or entity, exploring the formation of subjectivity while testing its limits. Through performance, video, photographs, and works on paper, Incarnational Aesthetics problematizes iconic moments, underrepresented histories, the raced and gendered politics of representation, the focus of media culture on simultaneous idol worship and destruction, and the relationship of identity to the state.

"Artists: Tamy Ben-Tor, Mathieu Briand, Lilibeth Cuenca, Rico Gatson, Molly Larkey, Nikki S. Lee, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Joanna Malinowska, Rachel Mason, Alex McQuilkin, Yasumasa Morimura, Clifford Owens, Jeffrey Porterfield, and Cindy Sherman."

Ernesto Neto

ernesto neto
31 october - 23 december 2009
opening: friday, 30 october 2009, 6 - 8 pm

Ernesto Neto’s sculptures fill entire rooms and take them over completely by implanting a new, quasi-architectural structure within them. The environments that thus come about - which make do without right angles or static structures – resemble organic landscapes or fantasy dwellings.

In his second solo exhibition at gallery Bob van Orsouw, the Brasilian artist follows his personal sculptural concept of the „nave“ – the ship – paraphrasing those of his sculptures that are hung from the ceiling and made up of fabric. The visitor is meant to experience the works in multi-sensory dimensions by an all-out submergence in the sculptures, by entering, touching, even smelling them. The exhibition furthermore encompasses relief-works and sculptures made out of wood.

Ernesto Neto (born 1964 in Rio de Janeiro) has shown his work in numerous international solo exhibitions, amongst others at the Park Avenue Armory in New York (2009) and, for the Festival d’Automne, at the Paris Panthéon (2006). In 2001, he represented his country at the Venice Biennale.
