WE CAN BE HEROES just for one day

Galleria 1000eventi is pleased to announce the opening of the group show

WE CAN BE HEROES just for one day

Though nothing, will keep us together / We could steal time / just for one day
We can be Heroes, for ever and ever / What d'you say?
(David Bowie / Brian Eno, Heroes, 1977).

In Metaphysik der Jugend (1914) Walter Benjamin indicates youth as the maximum moment of spiritual and bodily growth, a concrete, real experience of burgeoning vitality in which everything seems to become possible and legitimate, seen with an extreme, sharpened gaze. The artists in the exhibition represent an intentionally varied sample of the different metaphysical attitudes of youth. The idea is not to formulate a canon or a pre-set course, but to grant the impact of the selected works – many of which have been made precisely for this show – the possibility of documenting the traces of direct experience of the reality of a generation, as in a great visual seminar open to all the voices of the participants. The result is the portrait of one of the great ages of man, captured in its abundance and its restlessness, in which the Self, Benjamin writes, is “consumed by the will of youth and the desire to dominate future decades”. This ardent pledge, open to the future, is precisely the most authentic key of interpretation shared by the work of the artists in this show.

AURORA 2009

AURORA is a unique festival based in Norwich which focuses on artists’ moving image in the most diffuse sense. This year's FESTIVAL WEEKEND (13– 15 November) is an antidote to the ever-bigger, ever-faster policy forced upon moving image festivals: a return to a single screen and an attempt to create a ‘temporary community’ in which divisions between guest artists and audience are dismantled.

Highlights include programmes of work by artists JEM COHEN (New York), MILENA GIERKE (Berlin) and JON BANG CARLSEN, introduced by the artists; discussion sessions about the moving image as social project with BEATRICE GIBSON ('A Necessary Music'), SHEZAD DAWOOD (‘Feature’), MARK WILSHER and GRAEME HOGG; and about the moving image and the social network with JAMIE KING (Steal This Film), RICHARD WRIGHT, ANDREW KÖTTING and GARETH EVANS; and thematic film programmes with work by BEN RIVERS, LUCY PARKER, NICK COLLINS and others, introduced by the artists. Live music comes in the form of an exclusive double set from the great ALASDAIR ROBERTS and Jarman Award-winner LUKE FOWLER; DJ sets from EMMA PETTIT & NICK LUSCOMBE (Roots & Shoots) and
more besides. Exhibitions as part of the wider festival include ULTRA-RED / THE RURAL RACISM PROJECT and STRAY, a series of new polaroids and black and white prints by Jem Cohen.

MICHAEL BEVILACQUA

Every year, 22,000 visitors enjoy the work of over 1,000 leading artists ranging from Modern British masters to the most recent contemporary talent. Galleries are chosen by a selection committee and include major UK dealers such as Richard Green, Alan Cristea, FAS and Jonathan Clark Fine Art, as well as younger contemporary spaces.

The Fair includes the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, video and editioned prints and multiples.

Situated alongside the galleries in the main fair are two curated sections focussing on younger galleries, new work and contemporary photography:
Art Projects and Photo50.

Collectors will find solo and group displays and large scale installations from an exciting forum of international galleries including Foley Gallery (New York), Gallery Baer (Dresden) and Galerie f5,6 (Munich) as well as Bearspace, Charlie Smith and Sumarria Lunn from London.

Photo50
In its 4th year, Photo50 is a showcase for contemporary photography with artists selected by a distinguished panel including Anita Zabludowicz (collector), David Campany (writer and lecturer on the history and theory of photography) and a team from Goldsmith's MFA curating programme. The End of the Line: Attitudes in Drawing

The End of the Line: Attitudes in Drawing

"This exhibition of new and recent work by eleven highly acclaimed young international artists explores a diverse range of contemporary approaches to drawing. From small, intricately-crafted pencil drawings to expanded installations in which the ‘drawn’ lines are made from tape, or in which drawings mutate into animation, this exhibition celebrates a contemporary resurgence in drawing."

LAY DOWN AND SHINE

KRISTOF KINTERA: ‘LAY DOWN AND SHINE’

10.10.2009__14.11.2009

galerie schleicher+lange is proud to present Lay down and shine, a new exhibition by Kristof Kintera (1973, Prague, Czech Republic). The Prague-based artist’s approach often involves taking familiar objects that he alters substantially, transforming them into sculptures.
Via this process, the everyday all of a sudden conveys the impulsive, as in the work of Charles Ray, Robert Gober and Maurizio Cattelan. But rather than alluding to powerful historical figures or leitmotivs as these artists do, Kristof Kintera chooses more innocuous items.
He gathers objects straight out of the average consumer’s day-to-day life, such as bicycles, pushchairs, plastic bags, vacuum cleaners and sleeping bags. The artist corrupts their normal use by ascribing them micro-fictions or absurd usages, and attributing them the status of works of art.
In his current show, the artist alludes to urban organisation: to create these new works he has salvaged a street lamp and portable security barriers setting up an environment associated with crowds. The barriers can serve to prevent a surge of demonstrators or to organise a queue before a rock concert. The street lamp illuminates everybody indiscriminately and is reminiscent here of one of Kristof Kintera’s previous pieces, My light is your light (2008): a huge chandelier made out of street lamps retrieved in Prague (they had been discarded by the council, having been replaced by a more modern version).
