morality @ Witte de With

Morality is the year-long leitmotiv of Witte de With. It incorporates a changing constellation of five exhibitions, a discursive web platform, film program, performance cycle, symposium and book. Morality is one of those inflammatory topics, often evoked as being in crisis, about which everybody and every society has an opinion.

Exquisite Corpse

Ormeau Baths Gallery is pleased to present Exquisite Corpse, an exhibition of 17 works from the IMMA collection that seeks to reveal a variety of perspectives on the Collection. The title of the exhibition is drawn from the game ‘Exquisite Corpse’ which was invented by the Surrealists in 1925 where a collection of words or images are collectively assembled. In this case the game’s structure is used to tap into the eclectic character of IMMA’s Collection through the choices and viewpoints of individuals from a broad spectrum of the arts including Dawn Ades, Gerald Barry, Aileen Corkery, Barrie Cooke, Michael Craig-Martin, Mark Garry, Deirdre Horgan, Jaki Irvine, Nicola Lees, Tony Magennis, Frances Morris, Colm Toibin and Mick Wilson.

John Bock

John Bock’s new show with Sadie Coles HQ takes the form of an installation of seven new sculptures. The walls of the Balfour Mews gallery space have been saturated with colour to house Bock’s absurdist and theatrical assemblages. Concocted from familiar household objects – a suitcase, cushions, an empty bottle – the works have a peculiarly machine-like appearance, and form sculptural analogies to Freud’s mechanistic conception of the human psyche.

Miroslaw Balka

MIROSLAW BALKA
TURBINE HALL COMMISSION, TATE MODERN

Galerie Nordenhake congratulates Miroslaw Balka on the commission for the prestigious Unilever Series for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London.

The installation How It Is consists of a giant steel structure encasing a cavernous unlit dark area in which visitors are invited to walk. Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1958, Balka lives and works in Warsaw and Otwock. Including installation, sculpture and video, his works explore themes of personal history and common experience, drawing on his Catholic upbringing and the fractured history of Poland.

Balka’s works always convey a bare and elegiac quality that is often connected with traumatic historical events or religious experiences. His memory does not aim at objectivity but is always subjective and emotional. In 1997 the city of Stockholm commissioned him the Memorial for the victims of the Estonia ferry disaster.

The collaboration between Galerie Nordenhake and Balka started in 1990 by presenting his first solo exhibition in Western Europe.

The installation at Tate Modern will be on view until April 5, 2010.
